Don't forget Novotel in Jacarepagua - across the street from Hilton. Stayed there for a few days and not bad. Also, I believe the Ramada on the beach (used to be a Sheraton) in Barra da Tijuca. The Hyatt is limited service - saw it a year and a half ago when under construction?
The Sheraton Barra rebranded to Radisson (not Ramada), but is now Sheraton again.
The Grand Hyatt is fully operational AFAIK. If there's any impression that the facility is not finished, it might be due to the Grand Hyatt Residences, which are condos that will have the ability of using the hotel's infrastructure and services.

Did you ask IB if they could give you your AA BP? since it was a OW carrier, IB could do the luggage too all the way to MIA, even on separate PNR, but sometimes it won't work for long layovers.
You don't need a BP for transit in GRU, you can always get your BP at the gate or at the AC, if you don't have status, you will get the BP but not the access to the Club.

A follow up to this question: got a 10+ hour international-international, OW-OW, J-J layover at GRU tomorrow. I was hoping to use the AC upon arrival for a shower then head out to the city. Is this backtracking from the departures lounge to arrivals immigration possible, and if so, how do I make it happen? I.e. do I need to ask staff to let me through to a special corridor, or is there a "formal" channel that I walk through?
It's easy, and to get out just take the elevator next to the moving walkway down to the lowest level (I think- it's been 3 months) and you can make your way to immigration.
I've done this like 2 or 3 times total and never had an issue.

Nope it's pretty simple, follow the signs from transfers upon arrival, and then go through the security (no BP needed) and you can enter Terminal 3.

(1) At the entrance to transit security, there was a woman "checking" whether or not entering pax were connecting to international flights. Her "check" merely consisted of yelling "Buenos Aires? Montevideo?" at the masses, and when I passed through she asked for my last name and destination. She ever briefly glanced at some printed list (I'm sure she wasn't able to locate my name and destination that quickly--I was connecting much later in the day) and then asked if I knew where I was going, to which I responded in the affirmative.
(2) On the way out, after taking the elevator from level 2 to level 0 (the elevators are located across from Hudson News and there are signs outside them to guide pax to the right levels), I exited the elevator to face a set of tensa barriers blocking access to immigration, and the "backside" of another transit security location than the one I passed through (presumably where people connecting from other terminals end up; I passed through security on level 1). I asked the staff for access to immigration and they simply told me to undo one of the barriers.
Either way, what I and others have done seems to be somewhat of a "loophole." I imagine the elevators I took were designed to take folks from the level 0 transit security to departures on level 2, not the other way around. But, this could be a nice workaround for those who are AC members or would otherwise have access to an international departures lounge on arrival to get a quick shower before a domestic connection or a long layover.

Admiral Club at GRU - purchase entry?
Long layover at GRU next month. Travelling in Y on BA and not enough status for lounge entry. I hear good reports about the AA lounge and that I can purchase a day pass at the door. Is that correct and is it as good as others are saying?

Not sure how long your layover is but the lounges would be a much better place to sit around for hours than near the gates, IMO.

I'm there about 8 hours. Would head into town but I am a little concerned that traffic, etc may screw me on getting back in time. My flight leaves at 1630 so perfect for the quiet period in the Admiral Club. Would you recommend any other particular lounge that I can pay for a day's entry?

You should be able to purchase a One Day Pass (USD $59) at GRU (that will normally also work at other Admirals Clubs on the day it’s purchased). Unlike some lounges or lounge passes, there’s no time limit to your lounge time.

The Star Alliance lounge at GRU also accepts Priority Pass. But in my experience the showers are better at AA than SA lounge. Foodwise I think they are pretty much the same. In terms of space, the SA lounge is bigger (but also get quite crowded in the evening with TP,LH.LX,AC,CA,TK flights)

The LATAM lounge is next to AC, and I've heard its nice. I happen to like the GRU AC lounge - the food isn't that great, but I'm usually full from the big meal my daughter in-law cooks for me before I leave. If you have 8 hours to kill, depending on the day, you can get to Avenida Paulista for a good walk, the museums / park at Parque Ibarapuera or even Parque da Aclimacao which is smaller but in a neat little neighborhood that I believe is quite safe.

Arriving on AA from DFW and switching to LATAM to SDU. Will I be able to use any solid lounge like the AC or Star Alliance lounge? or am I ushered all the way out through customs and into the meddling domestic lounges that are far less exciting?
