US Airways, American Airlines and the U.S. Department of Justice disclosed Monday that they’ve picked a mediator to see if they can resolve any or all issues in the DOJ lawsuit seeking to block the air carriers’ merger.

From AA + US statement today (11/27/2013) (bolding added):

Approvals Secured – Let’s Merge

·Following a hearing on Monday, today the Bankruptcy Court approved two motions that allow American to take the final steps to emerge from restructuring and for us to close our merger.

·First, Judge Sean Lane approved American’s settlement with the DOJ and the states attorneys general that were parties to the lawsuit, finding that even with the divestitures, American can go ahead with its Plan of Reorganization (POR) and merger with US Airways. Second, Judge Lane issued a ruling that allows us to close our merger prior to the resolution of a private antitrust lawsuit that is before the Court.

·As a result of these rulings, AMR filed a notice with the Court, stating that the proposed effective date of the POR will be Monday, December 9.

·That will be an important date of celebration for our people – on that day, American will emerge from restructuring and we will legally close our merger.

·While we will come together as a company to mark the day, we will not be making any changes from a customer perspective until after the busy holiday season.

I think this was the last legal obstacle to the merger.

NEW YORK (AP) - A New York judge has refused to block a merger between American Airlines and US Airways, saying a bankruptcy judge was right to reject the arguments made by a lawyer for some consumers.

U.S. District Judge Loretta Preska ruled Friday that U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Sean Lane was "correct in all respects" in deciding last week to let the merger proceed. She rejected arguments of imminent harm to consumers put forth by San Francisco attorney Joseph Alioto. She also refused to stay the effect of her ruling while Alioto appeals.

Supreme Court Declines to Block American, US Air Merger

The United States Supreme Court late Saturday night gave the green light for American Airlines and US Airways to merge. The combination will form the world’s largest airline.

On Saturday, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg denied a stay request filed by a group of passengers and travel agents. …

From today's Dallas Morning News:
http://www.dallasnews.com/business/a...st-airline.ece

From interview with Kirby and Parker:

Jan 7 will see
- reciprocal "recognition" of elite status (exact form unclear)
- reciprocal earning/spending of miles

Codeshare begins mid-January/February; all flights to be covered by March (staged?)

US to oneworld after March 31 (so presumably before April 1, AA op by US flights don't get credit on other oneworld airlines)

Just received this E-mail:

Dear uxb,
AAdvantage Dougie's Preferred Number: xxxxxxxx

Today is a big day for American and US Airways.

Our merger has legally closed, which means we're taking an exciting step toward building the new American. We're combining to form a stronger airline with an extensive network, greater schedule options and a modern and fuel-efficient fleet.

It's important to note that there is no impact to any existing reservations you may have with American Airlines or US Airways at this time, and any mileage balance or elite status you have earned in either frequent flyer program is completely safe. You can continue to earn miles through existing AAdvantage participating companies — including the Citi® / AAdvantage credit cards — and redeem those miles for the same great awards.

We'll continue to function as two separate airlines for quite some time, and very few changes will happen immediately. For now, you won't see any changes to your travel experience as we will be focusing completely on delivering a superior operation during the busy holiday travel season. But, beginning in early January, we'll announce exciting new benefits such as the ability to earn and redeem miles on both carriers and reciprocal lounge access.

Your continued loyalty is very important to us, and we will be working hard in the coming weeks and months to deliver a world class travel experience. Look for additional communications from our new American team on these and other benefits headed your way. You also can stay up-to-date on the latest developments by visiting aa.com/arriving, as well as following our social channels.

I'm excited to start this journey and look forward to building a stronger airline for you.

Sincerely,

Scott Kirby
President
American Airlines
