Yep. Give the agent your credit card number so they can charge what AA calls the luxury tax.

Cue the semantics pedantics who insist that you use the official government name for the tax.

Yep, upgrading from economy to a higher cabin will result in an extra £65 APD becoming payable if your final destination is in the US

APD = Air Passenger Duty. The amount varies depending on cabin class and country of destination. Note, for a business-to-first class upgrade, there is no additional APD.

could be cheaper for you to fly to Dublin and go from there (I often do) no APD and the normal tax is only about £30 instead of £140 (not counting the extra £65)

Quick question on the APD. I am assuming if you get Op-up'd, that there would be no APD charged but given how aggressive the tax guys can be, who knows. Can anybody confirm that?

The airline will pay the extra APD in this case. But of course, this incents the airlines to sell upgrades at the gate/counter to try to recover the cost, so they may be more likely to do so ex-UK. Of course they cannot demand you pay an additional amount to board, certainly not if they're a US airline or flying to the US, the DOT prohibits that.

The reduced rate of APD continues to apply to any passengers who receive an "op-up" so in fact noone has to pay the extra amount as none is due

I laugh every time someone perpetrates the sham that the "regular" rate is the one paid by ~18% of the passengers, while normal passengers pay the "reduced" rate. Use your independent critical thinking!

No sham - just using the same terminology as that used in the legislation.

I'll save my independent critical thinking for things that actually matter

+1, and you get go visit Guinness and Jameson too.
Usually what you save on a flight from the UK to DUB is paid for by the saving in APD.
I do open jaw and fly into the UK but out of Dublin.
