What does aircraft type CHG mean?
I am looking at booking a return from EZE shortly after Jan 1, 2007 and this is what comes up as the equipment on the various flight options.

CHG means change which should only appear if you have a single flight number for 2+ actual flights (of different a/c types).

Specifically, AA908 on those dates flies EZE-MIA on a 777, then MIA-DFW on a 737.

CHG = Change, as in change of aircraft. Flt 908 operates EZE-MIA as a 777, then continues as Flt 908 MIA-DFW as a 738.

Which really is not a huge issue .. since you have to clear US Immigration/Customs in MIA .. you will be getting off the plane and then thru formalities .. recheck your luggage.. reclear security and go to the new gate.
Where CHG becomes a pain is someplace domestically where you think you are on AA12345 from A to C with a stop in B.. only to find out you are on one plane from A to B and then another from B to C. In your case .. it really means minimal as you have to get off the plane anyhow. |
CHG = Indicated change of aircraft, also often a "Change of Gauge" here. A slick way of also depriving you of some miles, as if you had though you'd get DFW-MIA-EZE miles, you won't; you will only earn as if you were flying DFW-EZE.
AA used to have (AA38) a SFO-DFW share flight numbers with the DFW-ZRH flight - even though they were both 763s, one changed aircraft in DFW - but iles awarded were only as if there were a nonstop SFO-ZRH. At least there wasn't the insult of changing from a 777 to a Mad Dog or Trireme for ~four hours. (True mileage-gobbling FTers would probably book a different SFO-DFW flight to get full miles.) |

Not always. Sometimes it is an advantage - eg if on mileage limited ticket (paid or award), or if restricted in the number of flight segments allowed.
