with the Euro to USD exchange, buying miles is pretty sweet, but paying extra 13% taxes is absolutely painful.

For buyAA Miles, this bonus offer is the biggest in terms of miles offerred thus far for 2010, no?

If I remember correctly November 2009 yielded the biggest bonus for buyAA miles in calendar year 2009.

So the bonus this November was equal to the offering in November 2009.

I guess since Black Friday falls in November, AA is offering a pretty good deal on miles as well. [if you're buying them from AA]

AA bonus for purchasing up to 60K miles

Just got this -- not of use to most, but about a

What better time to use your American Airlines AAdvantage® miles to travel than now? Whether you want to fly home or take off for somewhere exotic this season, give yourself the gift of travel this year.

Don't quite have enough miles to book your travel now? When you buy the miles you need, you'll earn a special bonus — for every 6,000 miles you purchase, you'll earn 2,000 bonus miles, up to 20,000 bonus miles!

Or purchase 6,000 miles or more through the giftAAmilesSM program for a friend or family member this holiday, and earn a bonus for yourself!

For the month of November only, the limit of purchasing 40,000 miles per account, per calendar year has been raised to 60,000 miles.

These great offers end November 30, 2010.

HOLIDAY TRAVEL AWARD - 20000 Bonus AA Miles

I just got this in the mail:

"What better time to use your American Airlines AAdvantage® miles to travel than now? Whether you want to fly home or take off for somewhere exotic this season, give yourself the gift of travel this year.

Don't quite have enough miles to book your travel now? When you buy the miles you need, you'll earn a special bonus — for every 6,000 miles you purchase, you'll earn 2,000 bonus miles, up to 20,000 bonus miles!

AA seems to be doing this every year now. With this offer one can buy 80,000miles for $1642.50 (inclusive of taxes).

My question is whether it is worth it to buy these miles? It does not seem to be too bad keeping this scenario in mind:

RT Flight from ORD-DEL in Econ. class ->$1200 (approx)
80,000 bought Miles used for upgrade - $1642.50
Co-pay - $700 (350 each way)

Total flight cost in J class would be $3542.50. If one was to purchase this trip in J class it would cost about $4700 - $5000 (Business special fare) and over $6000 (during peak season). So one could save anywhere between $1200 - 2500. The one obvious down side would be not accruing 1.5 points/mile for purchased J class ticket. Am I missing something?

Note: EXP members please take into consideration that not everyone has EVIP's for upgrades

Does it really take 6-8 weeks for the bonus miles to post or is this just to cover themselves? Thinking about purchasing miles to book a one-way lhr-cpt trip and I could save $200 provided the bonus miles posted straight away or in the next few days.

Am also wondering how soon bonus miles hit.

And, with an Am Ex Premier Rewards Gold that offers 3X points on flight purchases, does anyone know if buying miles falls into that category?

That could sweeten the deal.

Thanks!

Earlier this year, I purchased what was then the maximum amount of 40,000 miles. Now this November offer allows up to a maximum of 60,000 miles, so I could purchase another 20,000. But the bonus is stated as 2000 miles for every 6000 purchased -- so does that mean if I purchase 20,000 miles I would receive a bonus of 1/3 (6667 miles), or only a bonus for increments of 6000 miles, i.e. bonus miles only for 18,000 of the 20,000 purchased? Thanks!

I am trying to gift miles to a friend today and whilst the AA website is still referring to the bonus and 60,000 mile limit when I click through to Points.com the limit is shown as 40,000 and no reference to the bonus. I have telephoned AA and they have said to contact Points.com, whose live chat is not available yet. Has anyone else tried to buy/gift today?

Update: After telephone conversations with AA Web Services, AAdvantage Customer Services and live chat with Points.com the site now appears to be working.

If you use a Starwood card where you get 25k miles for 20k points, it's like getting 2052 miles for the $1642.50 charge. This brings it to a nice round 2.00CPM (1642.5/82052)
