Interesting. The number that jumps out at me: after 5 years (2003-07) with awards between 7.2% and 7.8% of overall pax, that number jumps by 30% to 9.7% for 2008. Is that a statistial anomaly, or an effect of rising cash airfares due to the spike in oil prices last year?

Terry Maxon could have done a much better job of explaining the second chart; the "Liability from program" number includes unrecognized (deferred) revenue from the sale of miles to partners in addition to the liabilities arising from award tickets.

Since awards taken went up only slightly, I suspect it was a result of less paid travel. A lot of people cut back on travel due to the high prices as you mentioned.

falling load factors mean there are more chances to fill a seat with an award, without disrupting a revenue trip.
