Question about AA Reduced Mileage Awards (https://www.aa.com/i18n/aadvantage-p...age-awards.jsp)

Does anyone know if once these tickets are issued, they are treated as a regular awards ticket for any changes made?

I may be taking a very short notice trip due to a death in the family, but it is pending approval from work. I can call in and book the reduced mileage award now as there are very convenient SAAver flights available, but I'm wondering if I can change them to further out if work does not approve. I know I'll be traveling up there at least once later in the year to visit family, but no guarantee the airport will still be on the reduced mileage list then.

Thanks

Does dropping a segment without a fee depend on whether it is a MileSAAver or Anytime award? I was under the impression it doesn't. I have a round trip JFK-LIM-CUZ on LATAM. The rep said I will be charged a fee to drop LIM-CUZ because it's a MileSAAver award. If it was Anytime there will be no fee. I want my outbound to be JFK-LIM. Will like advice before I call again.

Unless there has been a very recent change, the agent is mistaken. HUACA.

Just a quick update.

Called back. Rep did not know of the dropped segments. Referred her to the documentation. After a few minutes, she came back and fulfilled the request. No fees.
JFK-LIM-CUZ is now JFK-LIM.
I was also able to change my outbound from Economy to Business, no change charge.

AA Award Change after Issuance

A couple of questions. First, i have a TPAC saver award on JAL in business that will require a stop in NRT. I now see that the AA non-stop is now available in business a the saver level. What fees are involved in changing the reservation? Would I have better luck asking for the change when i check in for the flight at the airport? Second question, the return flight on this award is booked at the "anytime" mileage rate. if the saver rate subsequently becomes available can i simply call and re-book this segment to save some miles. I have no status with AA. Thanks.

There are no fees for this first, outbound change.

You would be required to redeposit the second award ($150) and have a New award ticket issued.

Please read the Wikipost above for more information about voluntary award changes.

AA Award on BA: Fee to Change Dep from ARN to OSL? (to merge)

I have a 1-way AA award flight from ARN-LHR-SJC in BA biz class that I would like to change to OSL-LHR-SJC.
-The LHR-SJC flight on BA would be the same flight I currently have booked.
-OSL-LHR biz class on BA is currently available on aa.com.

I read a couple of things online recently (sorry, I don't remember where) about AA award changes:
1) no fees for changing origin airport if the airports are in the same region
2) no fees to drop the first segment of an award flight (If, for example, I just purchase the OSL-LHR ticket separately). There were some criteria, but I don't recall what they were.

I just called AA to inquire about these changes and they said either scenario would incur a $150 change fee.

As a data point, I was successful in changing an AA award flight last year from SCL-DFW-SFO to SCL-DFW-SJC without incurring any fees.

Is this a HUCA situation?

Thanks.

You should have been charged to change the destination airport on your award last year; sometimes, we just get lucky.

The agent you spoke to today was correct. Changing your origination airport from ARN to OSL will trigger the $150 fee. Dropping the ARN-LHR segment will also trigger the $150 fee because you would be changing the award's country of origin. (If your original award had been MAN-LHR-SJC, you could have dropped the MAN-LHR segment without charge, because the award's country of origin would not change.)

Ah. Thanks, Guv!

You should be able to find a one-way flight from ARN to OSL for under $90.

I need some advice. I want to book an econ ticket to Europe. I have 28.5k miles, need additional 1.5k miles. I have the Barclays card that gives me 10% back. Would the following trick work:
I call and book a "off peak" award on the exact route and airline I want and then after it's issued and I have gotten the "refund" of 2000 miles I call in to change the award to peak pay the additional 7.5k miles. Would this work?

No, that won't work, otherwise everyone would be doing it as a way to essentially get a few "free" miles.

When you book the off peak award, your account wound see a -22,500 for the flight then a +2,250 for the 10% rebate. In order to change this to the peak date, AA has to first redeposit the award (+22,500) and will take back the rebate (-2,250), so you'd be starting again with 28.5k.

How about downgrades?

I had a first class award ticket and ended up going standby on an earlier flight, in coach.

Does AA refund any miles in that case? I don't really care and would not ask for a refund, but if the refund is automatic, I'll be happy.

Unfortunately another award ticket question:

I booked a first class sAAver (25,000 miles each way) award ticket for a family member without status. I am Platinum. The trip includes the family member's AAdvantage number in the reservation.

The return trip is 2 segments. The family member now would like to travel from the same origin airport to the same destination airport, but just earlier on the same day. The connecting airport will likely change.

It looks like no change fee is payable, but when I log on, I can't change the ticket. Do I need to call AA, or can I just cancel the ticket and rebook it online? Or would the relative need to log on and handle this?

Thanks.

Call 'em up. As long as there is space its a free change I do believe(regardless of status).
