If you're wanting to earn/accumulate Starpoints based on SPEND rather than churning, the best option is the Starwood Amex. You earn 1 Starpoint per dollar spent, but can transfer multiples of 20,000 Starpoints to get 25,000 AAdvantage miles. That's effectively 1.25 AAdvantage miles per dollar.
And you can use the points for hotel stays, which can yield considerably more bang for the buck that miles transfer if done right.

Says the fella who I'm guessing is at least LT Gold and probably even LT PLT, no?
I agree with your assertion, but I'm always struggling to balance value with that quest to get myself safely in the lifetime zone as quickly as possible...

True, I am LT PLT, but that doesn't factor into my decisions all that much. After being EXP for about 4 years, PLT seems so inferior (to me, not a value judgment on anyone) that LT PLT is not that important.
Also, with 70K miles flown thus far this year, I can't imagine ever not flying enough to maintain at least PLT. And, if I didn't, I don't think the LT value would be all that much to me.
I second the SPG Amex card: https://www201.americanexpress.com/c...a9jnYPD0%2FlBg
You get 10,000 points for opening the card, 15,000 points bonus for spending $15,000 in the first 6 months (easy if you have a trip/cruise coming up) plus the 15,000 points for $1 spent=1 SPG point. That is a total of 40,000 SPG points that converts into 50,000 AA miles.
OTOH, you can buy 40,000 AA miles for a little over $ 1,000
Depends on your spending habits - it especially pays to open that card if you have a big trip coming up and spending $ 15,000 won't be all that hard.
Is there anything to stop you from getting the citi AAdvantage card, spending $750 to get the 25k miles, and then opening an SPG card to get 15k miles?
These miles all get transfered to your AA account right? so it doesn't really matter where they come from?

No. You can do that. If your credit is good enough, you can do this with the same card, too... close, open, close, open...
