Award ticket reinstatment

Is it better to get 2 awards from one account or 1 award from 2 separate accounts in case you need to reinstate the miles?

I can't find it right now, but I believe the reinstatement fees are reduced when it is 2 awards from one account versus 2 awards from 2 accounts.

This is correct, at least as of about two weeks ago.

Check here. It's $150 for the first award and $25 for each aditional award from the same account, versus $150 each.

Cheers.

One thing to consider: if you don't need the RDMs back in your account immediately, why not just cancel the PNR and then hang onto the ticket number? You have up to 1 full year from the original date of ticket issuance to use the award. If you end up needing to fly the exact same routing sometime during that year, then you can apply the old ticket # to the new PNR with no change fee (because it counts as a "date or time change" under the MileSAAver flight award rules).

Then, if 364 days have passed since the original ticket issuance date and you haven't had occasion to use the award, you can redeposit it and pay the fee. Nothing lost. Redepositing it today costs the same as redepositing it right before the time frame expires.

That is what a friend has done. In November he cancelled their J awards SFO to HKG, but he would try to fly in March. That is, of course, if he can find seats on CX. I dont recall exactly which is which but the Transpac is on CX one way and on JL the other via NRT.
