6,000 miles for 5+ hr delay reasonable?

Hi team,

Last week endured a 5+ hr delay in MIA waiting for a MIA-SDQ flight. Equipment swap / downguage meant a few people were IDB. I managed to hang onto my upgrade. Earlier today I received the email pasted in below. Any thoughts on whether this is typical? reasonable? Thanks much,

Dear 13F:

You are a good customer and we let you down when we didn't get you to your destination as planned on September 2. We are so sorry! In appreciation of your understanding (and to help minimize any lingering frustration you may still have), we've credited your AAdvantage® account with 6,000 bonus miles. Take a look at your account via http://www.aa.com/aadvantage in a couple of days and the adjustment will be there.

Please continue flying with us. We are committed to providing our customers with the kind of outstanding service they expect (and deserve) from us. We hope to see you aboard American again soon.

Sincerely,

x. x. xxxx

6,000 is actually pretty generous for Caribbean.

In 2007, I got 10,000 miles for a 5-hour delay to South America.

Domestically, you probably wouldn't have gotten anything.

Be happy with what you got.

a. It's reasonable
2. This should have been posted in the Compensation Master Thread
<circular link removed post-merge>

where you could also have looked at some of the other compensation for delays to make a decision of whether it matched others.

Cheers.

Back in '04 I got a surprise bonus of 6,000 miles for a 4-hour delay on a MIA-LAX flight (was PLT at that time). Being that the bonus was unsolicited, I felt appreciated as a customer, and was very happy to get anything from the delay.

Thanks for the useful feedback. I'll take the points and run. Forgot to mention that my two x 500-milers for this flight were not lifted from my account.

Apologies for misposting. I'll search harder next time.

I really don't know what others have recieved, but I'd rather get 6K miles for being 5 hours late than 10K for an inop IFE on a TATL.

I'm not sure what that means. I'd certainly dispense with IFE for 10k miles but would be pretty unhappy with a 5-hour delay regardless of compensation (and I've rarely gotten anything though admittedly not top tier anywhere).

$100 eVoucher per person for IFE

Is it worth writing a polite complaint letter/e-mail and if so what is the comp these days. I saw someone got 10K miles in 2002. Apologies in advance if this info is burried somewhere in the comp thread.

I reporting back that I received $100 eVoucher (not 10K miles) valid for 1 year per person on my PNR for the IFE not working on AA123 from DFW to HNL. It took them less than 2 business days to e-mail me back.

Flight cancellation compensation

My wife's flight from DFW-SHV was cancelled for mechanical reasons and she wound up arriving over 5 hours late- is she due some type of compensation.

There is a master compensation thread. The AA Wiki might be of use to you:

Unhappy Aa90 10/12/09

OK, I was on AA90 ORD-LHR this morning. Pushed back on time, managed to snag one of the good Y seats, everything is looking good. Somewhere over Canada, not so good. An issue with the emergency lights forcing us to turn around and head to Boston. Even if they could fix the plane, we'd miss the curfew at LHR so they deplane everyone and start rebooking. Given that the groundstaff at BOS had at least 45 mins warning things here were still a mess (it's not like AA90 was even full - maybe 1/2 full in Y, on a 767 no less). Thank the maker for the AAngels at the AAdmirals Club who sorted me out (got me onto the BOS-LHR flight tonight) but there were people being sent back to ORD, or onto JFK just to make a connection to LHR.

So, my question - given that I'm arriving in LHR 9 hours later than I was supposed to (and I like AA90 for a reason - hate overnights), should I expect any thing from AA? If so, what?

Maybe I've been lucky but this is the first time I've ever had anything like this on AA before...

This kind of question comes up so often, the AA forum has its own dedicated thread for it here.

AA sometimes proactively gives out miles in situations like this, without asking. If you don't receive anything soon, send them an e-mail through the website and I think you'll get some miles for the delay.

AA.COM still shows the flight on time
AA Cargo shows the diversion and cancelation

The BOS AA ANGELS ARE G R E A T

U should do an email to AA from the web page and explain what happened
Did u have to pay for a hotel u could not use in London
Did u miss any meetings
Just explain your situation
Did AA give u a food voucher
Legal saefood In Terminal B outbside security is very good

Sounds like AA have a problem with their 767's at the moment, i was on AA 78 last friday and an hour after we left Dallas we were diverted to Chicago as 3 of the 6 toilets had already blocked up. We had to change onto another 767 and we had to sit on the plane whilst they carried out maintenance checks.

Have to give the captain credit for explaining the overweight landing and what maintenance checks were going on.

Realizing that s..t happens when flying, particularly with a fleet the age that AA has, I first consider how well AA took care of the paxs and second what cost was to me (for a business traveler missing an important meeting, for a near 100% leisure traveler like me whether I missed out on a pre paid hotel or excursion). I have never asked for compensation but have been routinely given miles.

A half full 767-300, I think I saw that type of a/c half full once on an ORD/ FRA MR. Certainly not anywhere going south.
