Date 8/15/08 AAdvantage Status None Fare class Discounted Coach What happened See above posts Compensation 2,500 AAdvantage miles for both my fiancee and me. Comments I am still not 100% clear whether the cause of delay was weather or mechanical. According to weather.com, there was no precipitation in Chicago on 8/15... it was clear and 70 degrees. According to the email I received, "Weather, air traffic, unexpected mechanical difficulties and other circumstances beyond our control sometimes cause delayed or canceled flights." So it looks like whoever wrote the email didn't even know.

I'm pretty sure that's just part of the generic template they use when responding to complaints of that nature. I think the email I received a few days ago for a mechanical delay had the same wording.

What happened : Been flying AA for 30 years. After 4 delayed luggage incidents, all on different nonstop routes, I finally shot off a note to Arpey. This was on top of a 2 hour delay (where the pilot outright lied about the reason) and another 1 hour waiting at the baggage carousel for luggage that never showed up. How an airline can excuse itself of 4 delayed luggage incidents, on 4 different nonstop routes, is beyond me.
Compensation: A letter from the Exec office, $100 voucher.
Comments: IMHO, AA does not see the 30 years (nor the 9 family members I bring to the mat) of loyalty as counting for much. Hence, AA doesnt value my relationship.
Therefore, AA has converted a loyal AA flyer into just another web surfer, looking for the best price.

Flight 997, DFW to EZE
What happened 5 minutes before boarding, the flight was delayed for 13 hours due to mechanical problem with aircraft. No substitute available, so had to wait for incoming from Hawaii.
Compensation: Put my husband and I up at the Westin (nice hotel), and gave us 2 dinner and 2 breakfast vouchers. Plus 3 days later received 20,000 miles.
Thought the whole thing was well handled. Bummer losing a day of vacation, but that's the way it goes. We originally thought the GA said "Best Western", so we were happy when we discovered it was the Westin instead.
The wiki page on this topic has been updated with the addition of some general information on what might or might not qualify for compensation, and how to request it. Please feel free to make additions and corrections, particularly with regard to airport vouchers as I (fortunately) have no first-hand experience with these.
I know, I know. Never check luggage, etc. But let's just say I did.
Short story. SFO-JFK redeye flight was canceled (operations), I was rerouted on SFO-ORD-LGA. Downgraded from business into economy (award tix). Arrived 3+ hours late (which was manageable). But on top of this my suitcase got lost. It turned up promptly after I returned home from a 5 day trip. Meanwhile, I had to buy pretty much everything - from a suit to toothpaste.
I have no status on AA (1K with UA so I understand the implication). AA refunded me the mileage difference between a one-way business and economy award ticket (no consideration otherwise). I don't care.
But I am miffed about being offered $ 100 in expenses for a 5-day luggage delay (might as well have gotten lost). My CC only covers loss, not delay. My expenses were significantly higher - I don't expect AA to cover a Brioni suit but this is a tad on the low side.
Any suggestions whether it is worthwhile going back to AA to ask for more?
Unless you are willing to go to small claims court, AA won't likely poney up any more. In my case they claimed we were owed nothing since they lost the bags on our way home. They did want to make ammends with a small gesture of goodwill.

If you were so loyal, shouldn't you have status? Maybe lifetime GLD or PLT after 30 years? Just wondering.
