With a 4 hour mechanical, that included a delay, boarding, deplaning, and then more delay (aircraft switch), should I be expecting anything automatically, or am I best emailing? The flight was 5 days ago.
I do plan on asking for my stickers back as the GA announced that there wouldn't be any food in FC because of the aircraft switch.
I would ask for the stickers back, and nothing more as this seems fairly minor, all things considered. You may well get the "well, the upgrade is there to give you the bigger seat, and you got it," but I think the return of the stickers is not unlikely (nor unreasonable).

Fare class: N upgraded to C
What happened: IFE (video and audio) totally out (except for games). No personal players available as well.
Compensation: 10,000 miles. Miles were not requested, email discussed only the concern that the IFE seems to not work a lot (also did not work on a prior transpacific flight)
Comments: I don't count on the IFE anymore, it may be a case of bring your own entertainment (laptop for audio and DVDs).
I was expecting to get flamed a little when I started this thread. My view on this is as follows. The airlines expect us to pay all kinds of penalties and fees: taxi breaks down on the way to the airport and you miss your flight? Fork over the ticket change fee and fare difference (if the agent's in a bad mood). Want to get home two hours early so you can spend time with your kid? Need to pay the standby fee (even if your original flight is way oversold and the flight you want has tons of availability). Bag 10 lbs overweight 'cause you want to give your uncle some pineapples from HNL? Excess baggage fee.
So when an airline makes me late for work, cuts a day off my vacation, separates me from my belongings, makes me sick, etc... is it unreasonable to expect something in return? Apologies with meaning (i.e. not a form letter pasted together) actually give the airline an incentive to take corrective action. I agree that American has a great customer relations department, which is one of the reasons I fly them.

I had a similar experience on a flight from PVG to ORD. However, I didn't even send an email. I simply asked the FA once, and only once, about the IFE which did not have the normal menu system. I could still watch movies, but they were not "on demand" per usual.

To answer my own question, I received an unsolicited 3000 miles today.
What happened: 4 hour mechanical delay / plane change after boarding
Level: Plat
Fare: (G) upgraded to (X) after lots of passengers took reroutes
Received: 3000 miles
Interesting couple of non related events occured...
My sons flight to the UK was delayed due to mechanical issues for about 4 1/2 hours and he received 3,000 miles in his account for the delay. (He has no status AND we didn't write and complain about it)
Called to cancel my Citi C.C. yesterday and they offered me 3,000 miles to keep it.
I'm wondering what might be "special" about the 3,000 amounts. Or maybe it's just a coincidence.

Those are two pretty standard events for bonus miles to get posted to an account.
One is by AA Customer service (judgement call by rep), the other by the Citi CS (usually in language of particular agreement you applied for card under, or judgement of rep), so there is no standard amount floating between organizations.
Take them and run. Please don't complain about how many freebie miles you just got.

Now what would give you the impression I was complaining? Did I say I was expecting more? Did I say what I got was not enough? Sheesh!
My son's 3,000 miles came as a total surprise as he is still in the UK travelling around and hasn't even had a chance to contact AA and the offer from the C.C. guys was expected (any amount thank you very much) and taken.
The purpose for the post was to wonder if there might be some "standard" for these type of events.
I don't know about you but I'll never complain about ANY miles I get. (unless I get totally screwed over, but then that's another matter)

I also called earlier this year to cancel my card since I do not want to pay the annual fee. They waived the fee and offered me additional 7500 miles to stay.

WHAT?!?! 7,500?!?! Now I'm complaining.

Compensation question-How much for broken IFE?
Last night, I flew SFO-BOS in F. The IFE was entirely out, which saved me from the possibility of even having to consider whether to watch "27 Dresses." Do I owe AA some sort of compensation for protecting me from such a dreadful movie?
