oneworld flight numbers on another's oneworld metal appear to earn miles. I've earned AAdvantage miles at the BA rate (25% for discount economy) on a BA-coded flight operated by Iberia (LHR-MAD).
The challenge as I see it would be the rules that govern how codeshares are booked; I don't think I can book an AA codeshare, e.g. LHR-PRG or LHR-OTP, unless it is connecting from AA (or to AA on the return,) so it may be difficult to book, say, a straight LAX-SYD as BA - I am sure other more knowledgeable members will enlighten.
Right. I can book flights between NZ/Australia and USA on BA code only if connecting to/from a BA flight (eg LAX-LHR).

I believe the term is a married segment. Some codesharess require the flight prior to the codeshare flight be operated by the marketing carrier, others, such as CX from HKG-YVR, or BA JFK-MAN, or QF LAX-SYD/AKL/BNE/MEL do not have this requirement and can booked as a stand alone flight on the non operating codeshare flight number.

As mentioned above, when it comes to oneworld flights operated as codeshare by other oneworld airlines it is the marketing carrier that rules milage earnings - at least when it comes to AAdvantage.
A BA-marketed flight operated by AY will earn miles according to the BA table (= usually bad earnings). An AY-operated flight operated by BA will earn according to the AY table (= good earnings).
In some cases it also works outside the oneworld alliance. For example a AY-marketed flight operated by SN (AA partner) gives AY earnings including EQM/EQP and bonus miles. I have a colleague who got EQM/EQP/RDM+bonus miles flying on a AY-marketed flight operated by SU (non AA partner) but this may have been a mistake.
When it comes to codeshare operated flights there are several traffic restrictions and biltareral contracts controlling this.
Within EU it is not a problem and OpenSkies have removed the limitations between EU and US.
You cannot by BA tickets LAX-SYD without either LHR-LAX or SYD-LHR on the same ticket. BA simply hasn't the right to sell tickets between US and Australia on its own. There is no BA fare published between LHR that does NOT go VIA London. See routings on ExpertFlyer
CX has the same issue between JFK and YVR.
However you can buy a QF ticket between LHR and SIN as QF has gotten the rights to sell these tickets from UK and SG governments (OpenSkies between these markets).
P.S. It really really s*s that flying in Premium Economy on QF will not give any AA miles.

AA miles/points on Qantas - Premium Economy
Question: What does AA credit for flights on Qantas in Premium Economy?
If you look at the charts on AA, BA premium economy is shown as fare codes E, T, and W - which give 110% of miles flown and 1.5x points.
However, for Qantas, they don't show E, T, or W nor do they show a separate premium economy line on the chart. However, all other classes of fares seem to mirror BA.
They have to give you at least credit for Full Fare Economy, yes?
We had a thread on this not too long ago. I think the conclusion is that it doesn't credit anything because AA doesn't award credit for QF's E+ fare class(I don't remember what it is off the top of my head).

What if you book as a BA or AA codeshare?? Any ideas?
Absolutely amazing that you purchase a ticket that is 2x or more the price of an economy ticket and they don't even give you Discount Economy miles/points!

BA I'm not sure, but I doubt you can book Premium Economy as an AA codeshare since AA itself doesn't have Premium Economy. In a sense, AA doesn't not recognize Premium Economy. You can't earn miles on it nor can you redeem miles for it.

But you do earn miles for BA's Premium Economy, so there's no inherent disconnect between flying in premium economy and earning miles. I do agree that most airlines that have premium economy don't make it available through their codeshare partners, though.

One of the problems AA has, is that they have run out of Class Bucket Letters for codeshares.

No, that's actually not the problem here. They can (and probably will) map the QF PE fare to an AA exiting fare class to determine miles with additional business rules. They have done it already in many cases.
The likely hold up is that QF PE is a new product and the new mapping will have to be developed and they will have to pay Sabre for this. Given the relatively few numbers of customers in the AA system that will be affected in the short term, I doubt this has been a high priority item.
Look at the BA chart as an example. The PM Fare classes in no way correspond to AA premium classes. They map the E,T,W classes to the existing AA fare classes and then add some additional programming logic to calculate the 10% RDM bonus.
AA are giving "bonus" miles for flying Premium Economy (W or T). Interesting how you will get "bonus" miles but zero base mileage? Wonder if they will be changing their charts soon??
