What do FTers think of that? Buying back the Plat for $649? Is it worth it? I mean, I know I'll hit Plat again this year, which means I'll be flying another 37K BIS (already have 13K).
So the way I calculate it, I'm going to be getting 9250 bonus miles as a Gold, as opposed to 37,000 bonus if I re-buy plat. The difference is 27650 miles. By my math, that works out to 2.3CPM if I pay the $650. That, plus the extra benefits from being a Plat make it seem worth the spend.
Unless your travel is all international and so the Platinum status will get you lounge access, I would not waste the money on buying that which you will get back anyway; use the $550/$650 for something more worthwhile

The dilema is because of the mileage accrual at the PLAT level and trying to determine if it's worth the $600+
If there is no time limit on buying up to PLAT then I want to wait till I get a taste for VX as I'm in F on them on March 18th to check it out now with the SEA service starting.

If the OP has been plat for 9 years it is probably safe to assume that he earned it during that time. If that is the case, isn't a challenge legal here?

If you have 13k miles already in less than two months you might well be flying at a speed where you could complete a challenge quickly.
If you have not challenged recently you should be OK. If you get shot down on that (becuase you were already platinum) just try another agent.
Then instead of spending 600 dollars on buying back you could use your flights, maybe combined with a quick MR, and get something for that money at least.

Can't start a challenge until March, because OP will be Platinum through February. Perhaps not a big deal if a Challenge is the right answer otherwise, but it means that any Feb. travel already planned can't contribute to it.
Yes. Until you are actually gold, march 1, you will not be able to challenge. But as soon as march 1 comes along, do the challenge, if you can completed it in time. or do it when you have a rash of miles coming.
i would most definitely NOT buy back the status. Put that money into a MR if you must to complete the challenge.

I Challenged in '06 to get to Plat and made Plat naturally that year. in 07 I only got to 37K miles because dummy me didn't MR at the end of the year. Anyhow, I thought that you can only do a challenge once. Do you really think there won't be a problem trying to challenge again?
Actually, now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure the letter they sent said that I had until April to decide whether or not to re-buy PLT. I think what I'll do is fall back to Gold, and call them to sign up for the challenge again. If they say no, I'll try 3 or 4 times. If they still say no, I'll just pony up the cheese. I don't fly again until the end of Mar, so this won't really effect anything.

greetings:
Upon information and belief- may not try for challange w/i a two year or less from date of last challenge. If you did it in 06, may be o.k in 08, qualification date (s) may be impt??? Good luck
On the topic of re-qualification, for the past two years i've done about 65,000-75,000 miles, obviously coming up short of EXP but well over the PLT requirements.
My 2008 mileage will probably be similar, so I'm left debating whether the cost and time of approximately 25,000 worth of MR's is worth insuring EXP for 2009 (especially since I would probably have to do another 25,000 worth of MR's next year to keep EXP, given my annual travel seems to constantly fall around 75,000).
I just wanted to throw the question out there -- whether EXP vs. PLT is worth the time / money in my circumstance -- so I can throw in at least one MR this Spring if necessary.
