I've been earning miles since 1984 and currently have over 500K to date. I just checked the online account and can see no distinction between old miles and new. Does anyone know how I can find out if I have old miles? I recently purged my paper copies

Reason: made a mistake
Remember the old 15,000 mile RT upgrades go from Coach to Premium on 3 class domestic flights. Unfortunately, only the oldtimers in reservations can remember how to do this.

Using Old and New Miles
I have less than 10,000 "old" miles. Can I use "new" miles to top off my account to get an awared (ie: can I use approx 6k new miles with my 9k old miles to get a 15k transcon upgrade?)
I've had no problems using 20G in the past and called today and was told that I would be waitlisted for the upgrade. I thought (and I'm a bit fuzzy on this) with the old miles that if a seat was available in the requested higher cabin, it was yours and not capacity controlled.
Does anyone have a definite answer on this?

That's also my understanding. However, I have not put it to the test - and I have heard it is difficult to find an AA rep who understands the old rules.
it's probably the product that has advanced the most since then. the 1989 AA business class to europe had 38" seat pitch. I sat in the second row and the tray table scraped the seat in front with every usage.
You might also look at prizes above the 130K level. Buried in the fine print of the transition was the chance, on a one-time basis, to "use up" one's last old miles in combination with "new" miles. This came up during one of the old threads on old miles. Evidently if you can fund the majority of that last old award with "old" miles, it's claimable in combination with new miles.
Does anyone know where this "fine print" is and whether it's still possible to combine a majority of old miles with some new miles to claim an "old" award? I did a search and couldn't this info.
Another "old miles" question -- how do these miles work in relation to new miles? Specifically, I have a nice chunk of both old and new miles. If I make a redemption, which pile do the miles get pulled from? Obviously I would like any current redemption to come from the miles subject to expiration, but is there any way to make sure that the old miles aren't touched.
Any experiences with this? I'll call AA to ask, but given how few agents know about this, I figured I'd try here first.

They automatically pull miles from the "new". And, to answer earlier questions, "no, you can't "top off" old miles with new miles." And, to answer another earlier question "the awards were not capacity controlled at that time, but they now apply capacity controls to them."

10A award question
I have been reading the charts from 1989 regarding the old awards and had a question about the 10A award. It states it is valid on a no-advance purchase requirement ticket. Are there any hidden definitions regarding that purchase requirement (meaning any fare basis that has no advance requirement) or does that really mean full-fare (Y,B)? I have access to 12k old AA miles and this seems like a great use for those miles.

No, I don't remember! Any chance you have the verbiage for whatever 15K awards were offered? FewMiles' chart jumps from 10K to 20K.
