I should add that I don't know of a way to get this offer if you're not targeted for it. I have a pre-approved number that I have to type into www.applyonline.citicards.com.

When I first saw this, I thought a 20% bonus sounded excellent. But after thinking about it, if I spend $1,000 a month, I'll only get an extra 2,400 miles by year's end. As a PLT member (with the mileage bonus), that's like flying slightly farther than DFW-STL, round trip, once.

Reason: Clarification
We took the deal mainly because of the no annual fee and Costco doesn't accept MasterCard.
So why not get a SPG Amex? That's what i use at Costco.
I just cancelled my AAdv Citi Amex - never used it - just joined for the miles. They started with the "talking you out of cancelling" schpiel until i said i already had the Citi AAdv MC - and then it was not problem and they simply transferred my credit line to the AAdv MC credit line.

Citi AAdvantage Amex: no miles for foreign transactions?
On this month's statement I noticed that the miles reported to AA was considerably lower than the total of my purchases and the difference was purchases in foreign currency! Customer service didn't have an immediate answer. Is this a glitch, or do foreign transactions earn no miles?

AFAIK it's a glitch. But just to double-check that we are talking about the same thing:
You are referring to purchases, not cash advances?
These purchases have already posted to the statement in question?

On my AMEX cards, I notice it isn't unusual to have points take longer than one month to post for some purchases or bonus instances. But as oklAAhoma says, you don't get miles / points for cash advances (e.g. using the card at an ATM.)

These are all purchases. I am referring to the credit card statement that I received in the mail. It lists the (reduced) number of miles reported to AA, which have already appeared in my AAdvantage account.

That's strange. Sounds like a call is in order to straighten this out. Please let us know what they say.

If the forex transaction fees are listed separately, you won't earn miles on those since they are considered fees. This could be the difference. Otherwise, do the FT thing and call back until you get the answer you want.

Hmmmm ... and yet, I wonder.
This week, I got a notice in the mail about a class action suit regarding foreign transaction fees assessed on Visa/MC transactions. (I will now supposedly be getting a $25 check in the mail because of it). I didn't really read the details of it but it would seem to me that if I were a bank and there was litigation that was going to determine how much I can charge for foreign transactions (esp if I can't even recover my cost) I may say--OK, fine, well, there's no law that says I have to pay rebates on these transactions and further my loss on them, so I won't.
Just a thought. I have no idea if its related but the timing of the two events is curious.
It is definitely not the transaction fees. The missing amount is pretty much the same as the dollar amount of the foreign transactions (rounded to the nearest dollar). CSR could not give an explanation, they need to investigate what happened, which may take one or two statement cycles.

I'm not saying it is the transaction fees. I am saying it may be the transactions themselves. If they are no longer allowed to charged what they were for forx they may be looking to offset that loss of revenue elsewhere.
Like I said--just a guess but the timing makes it suspect.
