I once upgraded because I had passed the annual limit on miles. This was years ago, but it was effective immediately since I started receiving miles again.

Difference between the cards:
  • 60k limit on miles versus 100k limit (waived for elites)
  • Free annual account summary is automatic with Platinum. It's available upon request with Gold.
  • $50 vs $85 annual fee

(A few years ago Gold did not come with Trip Interuption/Cancellation insurance, but apparently now it does.)

I get junk mail every month pushing the upgrade. Usually the promo is for a free companion ticket (I have yet to be able to use one) or more recently 2K miles. I don't value either option at $35/year but of course YMMV.

Like OP, I would probably upgrade to save 10k miles - I doubt you would have trouble if you requested a downgrade the following year should the annual fee be an issue.

Alternatively one could apply for a CitiBiz MC which provides the same mileage discount as the Citi Plat card, but w/o the fee.

Need advice on upgrading Citi AAdvantage card...

I have a CIti Gold card meaning I can get reduced mileage awards for 20K miles. I need to book 4 tickets in the next few days, and am kicking myself for not having a Plat or Biz card which would allow me to redeem at 17.5K.

Is there a quick way to upgrade my card or get a new card?
Has anyone had any experience in receiving any promotions when upgrading their cards?

pt Citi card

Go to aa.com and click on "netsavers and special offers" and then click on "Earn Up To 40,000 Bonus Miles". If you apply before the deadline listed, you'll get 20k bonus miles after you charge $750 and 10k miles after $10k of charges in the first 12 months.

Have you tried calling citi to switch your account to platinum? Also, why not apply for the plat card online - with instant approval, you may be able to take advantage of the perks.

Thanks, I'll give them a call shortly.

How does instant approval work? Even with that, don;t I need to wait 14 days for a card....

I just realized I have a Bronze card as well...I'll see if that one can be upgraded.

I would apply online - you actually probably have the card in 7 days. Also, if you are approved - call and see if they can overnight it. If you dont get approved online, then call to upgrade your cards - should not be a problem.

Also, you can (at least they used to) combine the cards into 1 (they will merge balances and credit limits) if you want.

Peace!

I called customer service:

They offered me 5K bonus if I upgrade to PLAT. I will be charged the $35 difference on my first statement.

Is this worth it?

I've been hesitant to open a new account because of the impact on my credit score.

It seems to be worth it for you since you dont like to open another account.

They also offered you 5k bonus miles and you are able to book the rewards.

Others might say try the new card with a bigger bonus but if this is not in question go for it and confirm the offer they gave you.

One advantage of the Business card is earning two miles per dollar on AA tickets... as well as the discounted awards.

Unless you are going to apply for a *big* (i.e., house, business, ridiculously expensive car) loan in the near future, the impact on credit score will be insignificant and short-lived. Just be sure you offset any increase in your available lines of credit (keep the limit down or close another credit account).

cheers!

no, just pretend to be a sole proprietor, and use your name as the business name.

Does the application for Citi Buisness card have ability for instant approval? (I know that the Citi Plat does)
