FWIW, my wife missed PLAT for 2007 by fewer than 3,000 miles and we did buy back her status. Big mistake, as far as I can see. On the only domestic routes we fly neither of us were upgraded one on points for the year. SFO - JFK is just always full in F. So this year with another 47,000 flown by her, we're hanging on to the $600.00, thank you.
In this case, the OP would not be allowed to Challenge for lost status.
OP is not allowed to use challenge to keep his status, but I thought that he is allowed to do a challenge after he loses his status (assuming he did not get his status through a challenge). Perhaps I was wrong.
She wouldn't be allowed to repurchase this year in any case, so you still get to keep your money. But it's always requires a cost-benefit allowance, IMO, to decide - for some, it means lounges, upgrades, double (elite) bonus miles, etc. And if she missed qualification on miles, a mileage run could probably cost less than the $600. (Now, be prepared to take her out to a nice dinner... )

I don't think he would be able to rechallenge very soon after Feb 29, though I may be wrong.

I paid the money, not so much for upgrades, but for the mileage bonus--I am rapidly homing in on 2 M miles and want to do that ASAP.
Then I won't have to worry about not making PLT every year.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for not saying "honing in!"
Well, after 4 years of GLD or PLT, I have decided not to spend the $349 that would buy back GLD. I will descend to "dirt" status on March 1. It's been fun, and I did think about it, but after discussing with Lady Astrojets, we have decided that we probably aren't traveling that much this year and can put the funds to better use on our new home, and forthcoming nuptials in October. Our plane tix returning from the one-way repositioning cruise we're doing for our honeymoon are already purchased and upgraded with miles, and I guess that's the only trip that I really care about this year. Ha!
Of course, I will still be collecting miles, and spending time here. Who knows, I may wind up flying enough to re-earn status. Life off the road is already getting boring. And frankly, 577,000+ miles puts me too close to 1 million not to go for it while I still can.
A sorry decline for an Astrojet, much like the sad story of the CV-990 "Coronado Anteater." OTOH, with two mouths to feed at Rewards Network / iDine restaurants, you can earn those miles... On a more serious note, we look forward to your future presence, and though I will not pretend to speak for others, offer a hearty congratulations to the new addition in the Astrojets fleet!

Absolutely! The Whitcomb antishock body "carrots" were full of fuel - and even then, they were never used on fast transcons, as originally intended by AA.

My wife would never consider doing a MR, she's funny that way.
The problem for us was the elimination of the DFW -ZUR route. Now the only route to Switzerland for us is SFO - JFK - ZUR. I believe I did get upgrades a few time SFO - ORD, but these seem like short runs and so neither here nor there.
Bottom line, the cost analysis for 2007 was upset by the change in routing. So it goes...
But, hey, I am always pleased to take her out to a nice dinner.
