And I probably shouldn't have called you Buster. But I meant it in the nicest possible way.

I hope that you also meant "Somebody" in a likewise cordial way.

But of course. "Somebody" as in "somebody near and dear to my heart" beat me by less than a minute.

I'd sure not drop my teeth if I heard AA was going to allow a Challenge as a once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon; other airlines offer status challenges, but mostly once, full stop. (When they figure out it also has allowed some folks to renew who otherwise would have re-purchased status, especially.)

AA announce buyback for 2007/8

For anyone wishing to buyback their current level - Gold or Platinum, you can now do so if you are not going to reach the level required.

Interesting, for all those wondering what a year of plat on AA is worth to them, its not more than 649:

AAdvantage Platinum
AAdvantage Tier Level 40,000 Miles or Points or 48 Segments - $549
Less than 40,000 Miles and Points and less than 48 Segments - $649

All depends upon what you get out of the scheme - I guess if you want access to lounges and 100% bonus if Plat, then I guess it could we worth it.

If only they would sell Gold status to those who have no status.

You ought to be able to bang out a 5,000 point Gold challenge for under $800 as all mileage runs. Also if you can combine it with a planned trip the cost should come down.

For 800$ I complete a PLT challenge without any problems

549$ in my case with 44.547 miles is a bummer ! I rather fly to FRA over christmas again...

Ditto for Gold.

Challenge 2003, Gold thru 2/2004.
Earned Gold 2004 Gold thru 2/2006.
Challenge 2006, Gold thru 2/2008.

For those who don't want to click thru:

AAdvantage Platinum = $649 (less $100 if you earned 40k+ miles/points in 2007)
AAdvantage Gold = $449 (less $100 if you earned 20k miles/points in 2007)

Unlike prior years no minimum mileage is required though you must have flown at least one segment.

This special offer will be available to members from January 24, 2008, through April 30, 2008.

I like the fact that the offer is open until 4/30, but for $449 I would probably pass as I can do a couple transcons instead on another challenge. It's a much better deal for Plats, particularly ones that didn't fly much this year.

Indeed - it will cost me $1300 for both myself & mrs GentleGaint.

I have to now decide if it is worth me putting us both back on PLAT, or one of us dropping to Gold.

But then it is not much good if one us can get into lounges & book in at a better desk and the otherone can't.....

If you're traveling together, it's not a problem. You check in together at first class, and you're allowed to bring a guest into lounges, although I'm not 100% sure about all One World lounges. Exit rows can be booked by Gold, so there's no problem there.
