You'd probably get a better response if you'd posted more information - how many AA EQM or EQP do you have right now? 0 or 49,000? You'll at least get a 'soft landing' to GLD, so if you're not even sure if you'll do much flying next year, perhaps it's not worth a MR or (possible) buyback.

I currently have about 35K EQM and 33K EQP. And a MR is not possible as I am flying (Not on AA/OW) to India tomorrow for the remainder of the year. I tried to find an AA/OW itin for India, but they were coming out to double what I spend on AI, and since you do not get 100% miles on BA, I would not have made it anyway.
I will look into a buyback if possible. looks like i will have to be happy with Gold and just fly a boat load early in the year. Oh and I have used my PLT challenge in the past.. not sure if they will allow me to do it again.

You cannot use a PLAT challenge to requalify for PLAT status. I'd just settle in with gold and move on...

and you base this statement on what?
To shocka.. You say you are not sure you will fly in 2008 not alone AA, so why is plat status of any importance.
You can read the other thread and wait for buy back info but is it really worth it for you?
You will be plat until march 1 then you drop to gold if it looks like you will be flying in balance of 2008 do plt challenge (again) otherwise why bother
It's an American Airlines policy to not allow Platinum or Gold members to requalify for status using a Challenge. (A few have managed to get by this or to fly a Challenge some time after their status has dropped, but exceptions to a rule do not make a rule in themselves.)
And, agreed - it doesn't really sound like a reasonable ROI to buy back for $600, assuming it is offered.
N.B. all, through the advanced techniques available through high technology, the "other thread" is now "this thread;" it often is resorted to when search seems to be underutilized. - Mod hat on

Although a couple of years ago (2003), I was able to use a platinum challenge to qualify again a bare couple of months after dropping to gold (and after keeping platinum in 2002 only because of the 9/11-related "nobody loses status")... despite having originally made platinum in 2000 on a challenge.
(OTOH, I made gold easily each of the years in there, at around 35k miles each.)

Folks should not count on being able to re-challenge soon after dropping status. Sure it was done a lot in the past. But that was then, this is now. (Actually this is as of April 06)

agreed, but shocka didnt say he did a challenge last year.. He said "he did a plat challenge in the past"
and yes he shouldnt count on it
If you read my entire post I question he value of plt to him entirely.. He doesnt think he is going to fly in 2008...so why not just drop to gold then see what is best.

And I think that's probably the best advice shocka received.
