I changed a nonstop LGA-MIA to a one-stop LGA-DCA-MIA on December 31, 2005 because I would have been 11 EQM short of 100,000 if I had taken the nonstop.
Don't expect favors; fly the required miles.
Agreed. I was 400 EQP short last year, so took a quick RT to DFW on Dec 30.
The information about 95K miles being enough if you also have 90K points dates back to when the points/miles ratio was less generous than it is now. With Y and even B earning 1.5 points per mile today, and another half dozen more deeply discounted economy fare classes earning 1.0 points/mile, a ratio of 0.95 (more or less) points to miles no longer says "heavy spender" as it did then. I have not read any recent reports of EXP status being granted on this basis, and doubt it still is.
Another thing to keep in mind is that all the exceptions, including the 99K-mile leeway for EXP, are granted after the calendar year ends - when, if you don't get one, it's too late to do anything about it.
excellent points all.
moreover, the star file from which the 90/95 language was taken made it very clear that it was the minimum required for even consideration of a manual exception. 199 last year and 80 this year wouldn't have gotten onto the exception "playing field" back then, much less now...

Fly. Just fly. One four-segment r/t, or a couple of short two-segment ones would do it...and EXP is definitely, absolutely, positively worth it when you're THAT close.

Any suggestions on doing segment runs? I'll need to pull off an extra 10-15 segments in Dec to make EP. I won't make it with miles but I'll be within reach on segments.

I will have to look at the possibility of a MR for my renewal this year, due to an involuntary reroute that was not documented in the PNR as it should have been, if I can't get AA to post the original routing credit. What I am saying, given that is the possible balance, I will not hesitate to spend a day or two on an MR if necessary to maintain my EXP / complimentary "domestic" upgrades, 8 VIPs, EXP desk, etc. etc.

Being based in Paris it is not as simple as it seems, especially since my travel schedule is almost completely full till the end of the year. Will see what I can do to fit in a MR somewhere along the way! Thanks for all the comments
