As the OP is on the east coast. A handful of transcons in the first two months of '08 could put him back into Plat, and he wouldn't lose status. It should be a lot easier to when you only have to fly 50k.
No.
The qual. year is Jan1 - Dec 31. The membership year is March 1 to Feb 28th.
You only have the qualification year to accrue the needed points/miles/segments.

The OP will be PLAT until 3/1/08, so if the OP did 50K miles/points, whatever, in JAN/FEB08 s/he can keep PLAT until 3/1/09.
and the membership year STARTS as soon as you hit status, not on March 1.

A handful transcons come out to maybe 27.000 EQ-miles IMHO, how should this help the OP to retain PLT after DEC31?
He could do this beforehand but that is too expensive or time consuming. Depending on the OP's situation of time availability and how much he actually flies he should maybe consider the value of PLT status. This year brought him until today at least 20K bonus miles (counting 100% after 10K for the challenge) plus Priority in check-in, boarding, seating, standby. Nice If you fly domestic but if the miles result from 2 or 3 overseas flights then I dont see any gain that he wouldnt have gotten with GLD except 75% bonus and AC access.
If you fly domestic choose either way:
a) Wait for Buyback and consider if it is worth it for you
b) Get an AC membership to topp up some amenities that even some PLTs dont have
and then you might even try to add option C
next July, call again for a PLT challenge. Asking never hurts !

OP should reconsider whether PLT is truly a benefit - you obtained PLT via a challenge and flew a bit more to get you past gold but unable to retain platinum in the same year. Maybe you should settle for gold until you travel enough to utilize the benefits.
To the OP:
Did you take advantage of the AA25X bonus?
I did not sign up for that promo as I only fly in/out of DCA/IAD...
As far as requalifying for plat, I normally don't mind MR's, but around the holidays I like to stay at home...
Normally I have no problem flying 50k+ miles in a year, but this was a particularly slow year for my business travels and personal travels... I know that next year I'll probably make plat towards the september/october time frame, I just hate to lose the 75% miles on those miles until then...

If as you say you'll fly about 5K EQM a month next year, then you'll only lose the platinum difference between Mar 1 and when you requalify - say 8 months max - so a net 30K fewer miles.
That's not a huge difference, Get an extra credit card to make up the difference.
Unless the other plat benefits matter, that is, like international lounge access.

traditionally there has been leeway for those w/in 500 miles of GLD and PLT. The question is: do you want to risk that this policy will remain in effect vs. losing status all together.
