5k is a pittance compared to what you can get by getting multiple cards, especially since, in this case, you'd have to pay the annual fee.
No to deviate too much from the topic, but how many is the max, anyone know? Or is it based on total dollars in credit? I already have AA Platinum card, AA Biz & AA Amex. Can I get another one for each of those cards if they approve me and get the bonus miles?

the only limit is time; you need 60 days between personal card applications and 90 days for business card apps. anecdotally it seems there's a max of three cards at a single time, even when abiding by the time limit.
i cancel my cards as soon as i grab the bonus (i recall some reports about the bonus getting pulled if you cancel too soon but i've never had a problem) so i don't have that many cards at a time.

I don't want to churn too many cards right now because we're going to be applying for a home loan later this year. That's why I'm stuck on getting the 5,000 miles I signed up for. At the time, 25,000 miles more than any offer I had seen for American AAdvantage card before. Now there's the 40,000, or 30,000 if you let the 2nd year requirement go.
as I understand it, the initial credit app would lower your score some temporarily but that lowering effect will fade before the "later this year" that you mentioned I believe. If you have no balance or had a small balance then paid the card off it would not hurt your score in any way.

Thanks so much ... I'm getting ready to do this right now. And BTW--I just got off the phone with Citibank CS and they're claiming there's no record I'm eligible for those 5,000 miles. What a shock!

Reason: typo
I signed up for the same offer last year and the 1st anniversary is approaching. Just want to know what happened in order to take the best action before they charge me the annual fee.
Btw, I do have a scanned copy of the promotion letter. If you need it, let me know.

Citibank has told me that there is no record of that promotion on my account. Only the initial 20,000 bonus miles are all I am eligible for and they gave me that last year when I made the $750 spend requirement. They wanted written documentation of the offer. I submitted a copy of an email I got from someone on this board but haven't heard anything.
I would appreciate a copy of the offer. check your PMs for my email info.
I suggest you call them right away and see if you are registered for that promotion as well. If they say no, they will ask you submit some documentation as proof. I would do this right away before your anniversary date comes up.

So it's not going to affect my credit to keep bouncing throught all sort of credit cards with promos?

I too was in the similar situation as the OP, so I called ACS today to put me on a 3-way conference with a Citibank rep. He found the promo and had it notarized on my account so that my 5,000 miles will be credited once on my next billing cycle (basically the fine print read: 5,000 miles after one year anniversary once annual fee is paid)
So I'll wait until October 3. If not, I'll call again.
IMHO, best way to deal with missing miles of this sort is to send very polite letter to CEO of Citi at HQ. It will be refered to nice person in CEO customer relations who is likely to give you the 5K and a little something extra.
Look up CEO fax # on the 'Net and send POLITE letter. Of course, for 5K, may not be worth it.

Then you understand wrong. Any hard hit to your credit score stays on your reports for up to 2 years. Only soft hits have less impact. Since the application would be requested by the applicant, it would qualify as a hard hit - regardless of balance.

What is the difference between a hard hit and a soft hit, and how do they affect my credit score?
