Excerpts from the story from Reuters, as reported by Yahoo!:
American Airlines, a unit of AMR Corp., said on Thursday it had shifted its Asia-Pacific call centre operations to India from Australia.
American said Indian aviation technology firm Bird Information Systems Pvt. Ltd. would provide call centre services from its office in New Delhi.
"With increasing competition, lower margins and booming operational costs can be managed better by outsourcing non-core processes," Ankur Bhatia, executive director of Bird Group said.
Only if AA would out source their executive team to India, will things get better

When I was in Sydney the other week and booked a QF ticket on AA ticket stock and wanted to get it linked with my other AA tickets I simply dialed one of these numbers:
1-800-881-011
to place calls using Telstra
1-800-551-155
to place calls using Optus
And when prompted dialed the normal AA's 800 number in the States. My call was connected for free.

This service did work less than two weeks ago.
OK. I am now quoting my own post.
I just asked my friend to check this while we were messaging over the net. It definitely still works.
Dial one of the two numbers above and when it asks the number where you are calling to just dial the AA's number 1-800-433-7300. It connects the call for free.
It is a bloody long and involved process, not sure if AA wants Australian business ...
Certainly true; however they all seem to have been trained in the Phonetic Alphabet.
It really does help to know your Alpha's to Zulu's or at least have a readable copy available when you make your call.
Having typed that; I must admit my last call to IndiAA was answered by an customer services operator with a very good grasp of Aussie English (AKA 'Strine); did not need to quote a sierra or it's ilk at all.
This informative post was entered by sierra, echo, romeo, foxtrot, tango, yankee ...
Yeah I just booked some tickets by calling AA. The lady at the other end could not understand me and it was a shocking line. I gave her my email address for order confirmation and of course after repeating the email 5 times it did not come. At lest a receipt did come in the mail with my credit card details written on a piece of paper. I was not very happy about it all.

You can always write a comment at AA.com. Afterall, some US airlines reversed course on outsourcing phone calls due to complaints. On the other hand, regardless of where the call center is located (even in the same country as the caller), there is the chance of not understanding the other person. There are bad apples in every bunch. It's similar to the "outsourced" flight attendants: some swear that the Foreign Nationals on AA (or United, Air France, British Airways, Cathay, LAN, or any other airline that has flight attendants based abroad) are superior than the "local" flight attendants while others will claim the locals are far superior than the "outsourced" ones.
