Is the companion cert a free ticket, i.e. Buy One Get One? In this case, definitely not- can't upgrade award tickets. Even if it's discounted...probably not. Best bet is to call and ask.
Citi companion ticket issues and questions (consolidated)
My friend and I want to go LAX-FLL 03/20-03/26. I have a Companion Certificate that must be booked in V/M/L/K/W. Is it too early to book for this route and pay $442 (including tax+fee using the certificate) for 2 tickets now or should I wait later for the fare to drop?
Thanks!

$211 per person is not bad. A number of friends and I are flying LAX-FLL on AA 2/1 - 2/6 at $178 + $20.60 tax = $199 per person. Tickets booked back in October and in O Class. I fly this route 2 times per year and the $178 base fare is as low as I have seen it.
The current fare sales are through 03/08, so the lowest LAX-FLL is in the low $300s. Not sure if anyone here knows when the next period (late March - early May) will start on sale? But even when/if it does go on sale, not sure you will do that much better per person, especially with it being spring break season and given the fare classes you need to use the cert. Question then becomes what the sales price might be and is it a good use of the certificate vs. other chances you may have to use it down the road?

I just realized that I can't find the free companion ticket certs from CITI anywhere. Will they void the old ones and replace them if I call and beg, or am I SOL?
I would guess that, like most similar things, they would not be replaced. Probably says something to that effect on the cert. But thanks for posting before calling them and enriching our FT experience.

Why don't we just reply to all threads with a sarcastic remark about not calling AA/Citi/etc? Or better yet, let's just get rid of FlyerTalk since almost all of the questions posted here could be answered by calling someone.

Now that would be a really bad idea, and is not what I was advocating. More of a pointed response to inane thread-starting. The OP, and others, know what I mean.
To update, they said no, they couldn't replace them. I had a guess that they would say this, but I'd posted while on the phone to know whether it was worth asking for a super, or calling back. Unfortunately, doesn't seem as though anyone had a similar experience (because they are probably less absent minded than myselef, and don't leave things in rental cars while running to standby for flights that have no running water in F, and also are likely where I picked up the stomach flu, not that I'm bitter or anything like that).

Seems the whole F necessity/snobbery is starting to become quite a burden!

No, the whole "I'd really like to have a real dinner once I reach PHL as opposed to takeout crap snobbery" is the problem. I had an even better F seat on the earlier flight .

Do you think you could tell this story again, except this time use more detail? I think you left out some info on where you had dinner in Philadelphia, how many refills on the soda, and some other key points.

That was not a sarcastic remark. It just makes more sense to go to the source first, rather than to ask others to speculate.
[Edited to add:]If the OP said that he had called Citibank and was told he was SOL, and he wanted to know if anyone had had luck in calling back and pressing the issue, that would have been a different matter. Difficult concept, I know.
