I just called Citi as well and the rep spoke with a Citi/Advantage person while I was on the line. I was told that the certificate would be sent 8-12 weeks after the first qualifying purchase of $250 or more (the amount that would have triggered the bonus miles).

It's been more than 8-10 weeks for me and still no cert. I just called CitiCards and the rep told me she would put in a request for a "search" to see what happened to my cert and that I should hear something back in about 7 days.

The frustrating part is that my wife applied for her card on the same day, we received our cards in the mail on the same day, and she has already received her companion cert.

Oh well, I guess I'll be calling Citi back in 7 days.

Not for me, either.
I just submitted an inquiry through their online system, including a citation from the T&C. If anyone needs some text to back up their claim, see page 30 of this doc:

Got my companion cert!

I finally got my companion certificate last week But I got my Citi AAdvantage card in January.

I called Citi about three months ago to ask them about the companion certificate and was told that I opted for the 20,000 miles INSTEAD of the companion cert. I told them it wasn't one or the other, but 20,000 and a companion certificate. They maintained it was one or the other.

Wish one hand knew what the other was doing.

Their online CS told me to contact AAdvantage. Of course, AA is not to blame for this and can't send out the certs. Now I'm on hold with a competent phone rep at Citi who said that he's actually "very much aware of this program" and is going to go to his "higher-ups". I'm getting optimistic that I may actually get the cert...It's nice not to have to argue with a rep that I was actually supposed to be getting a cert.

The really frustrating thing about situations like this is that companies get to make up the terms of the promotions (number of weeks to wait, etc.) and then can't even live up to their creations...

My cert (valid through 6/30/07) came today in a light blue envelope marked "our way of saying thank you for your membership".

Coincidentally, my 3,000 miles for signing up for a no risk trial of "Credit Protector" also posted today. I know Credit Protector is a bad deal, but it was worth the small amount of time to cancel within 30 days to get 3,000 bonus miles.

Following up on this topic - I received the companion certificate on Saturday (9/2/06). Its valid through the end of June 2007.

Got mine this week, having applied for the card during the 25th anniversary promo. I agree with the previous posts on how once you get it, good luck using it, and that once you use it, you can't upgrade--even if you're EXP.
Well, at least the 25k bonus miles posted...so not a complete loss.

I got mine today too. I was surprised.
I had called citibank a month or two ago and asked about it. They said that I was not eligible/ the offer didn't include the voucher. I didn't fight it since they're usually worthless anyway. This one isn't great but I may find a use for it.
Some notes:
Travel on valid in 48 contiguous states + Alaska (unless you reside in Hawaii).
Reservations must be booked in: V, M, L, K or W inventory.
You can not upgrade the ticket
Blackout dates: 2006: January 1-6, November 17-27, December 21-31. 2007: January 1-8.
All travel must be completed by 6/30/07.
You must book with a phone agent and pay the fee (if not EXP or Airpass).

Unless I'm misunderstanding what certificates we are talking about here, and I guess that may be possible, but I also received my certificate from having applied for a card during the 25th anniversary promo. I was even able to use the cert and not only was able to upgrade both of us, we both received points.

In fact, I had two of those certs, one from a second application, and used it also for flying both of my kids. I didn't think about both getting points, so I only put one of my kid's AA numbers in the reservation. After I found out about my wife getting points, I called the EXP desk and got the points for my son added as well. According to them, both tickets were purchased from the "V" bucket and as such should be upgradeable and receive points.

I'm talking about the same cert. It came with the 25k miles, no fee for the first year...
Mine just came today. I haven't tried to use it yet. I was just reporting on what it says.
That's great news if they can be upgraded but you may have gotten lucky. I would guess that most GAs would only see the fare class and look to see special notes about it.

Which ticket do I need to book with an agent? the paid one, the original one, or both? ... where I'm going is: Can I use the certificate to get a free companion ticket to fly with another ticket already booked and paid-for?

Both.

I think there is a special reservation number to call when using the certificates. So you probably won't be able to use it on your already existing reservation. But as always, it doesn't hurt to ask. For it to even be a possibility, your existing reservation though, would need to meet all the certificate restrictions (i.e. appropriate minimum amount, fare bucket, etc.)
