My dad's got a small amount of miles about to expire on AA (~5000). His 3-year activity date is 5/21. If I order a magazine subscription *today* at the 400 mile level, will that renew his account for another three years? Do mag subs post immediately?
I got confused trying to figure out what is 'qualifying activity' during my meager research of this, and as you can see, I'm not well versed in the AAdvantage program. If this does not count, please suggest a good use of the miles, 4950 to be exact. Otherwise, I'll just get a WSJ subscription.

The flight I took on Thursday (5/17) will probably post on Monday (5/21).
I think you are too late for immediate posting (given that it is the weekend).
With that few miles, not sure it really is worth it to try this late to do anything. Let them expire then re-activate them and then have Dad fly someplace!
The price to reactivate miles is $50 for every 5,000 miles, plus a $30 processing fee per transaction, per account

After you take care of saving these miles, get Dad to join AA IDine so that he can add to his miles stash with little effort. ERewards and other survey programs can also help to save old miles accounts. Plenty of info on SPAM.
For future reference to others who might read this:
The min donation is 250 miles, currently to Make-a-wish or Mile for kids. It posts to your account immediately, and counts as qualifying activity. All set for another 3 years. Very very easy.
I know its only 5k miles, but no reason to let them expire if its this easy to keep them alive. Maybe he'll get the credit card bonus of 20k and be able to do something useful with them!

Why not sign him up for points.com
It's free and he can get 10 AA miles.
I'm new to FT, but I've seen posts like this in other forums, so I hope it's okay in this one.
Basically, I do most of my flying in SkyTeam or Star Alliance, but have about 10,000 AA miles. I just got notice that they'll expire by the end of the year.
Assuming that I won't fly AA or partners (I knowthat's the easiest way), what is an easy (and cheap) activity I can do to keep my miles from expiring?

I buy prints of digital photos from kodakgallery.com which I access through the aadvantageeshopping webpage. Through the end of the year there's a bonus of 5 miles per dollar spent. The prints are great too.

Find an inexpensive Hilton property for a weekend night stay.
For example, can usually get a night a Hilton Garden Inn in the Denver area for something around $69...you get points and 500 miles if you have your account set up correctly.
