After the transaction goes through, the vendor/charity has to then report it to AAdvantage. Depending on the vendor and type of transaction, it normally takes a few days to a few weeks/months.
Shouldn't take more than a few business days for your charity donation miles to hit your account. If you're worried about your account expiring, etc - don't worry: your miles will post under your TRANSACTION DATE, not the actual date that the miles post.
I concur with AA Dining. Miles posts within a week or so so it should be plenty of time. And, they do pretty lucrative promos every now and then so it's not a bad way to earn petty miles when you go out and eat
Agreed - my rewards network miles tend to post 3-4 days after the dine takes place.
Also you could buy a restaurant.com certificate through the shoppng portal, use code SPECIAL and get a $25 cert for $2 - atleast through the DL shopping portal the miles posted for me in 3 days.
I had purchased a ticket for me and my grandmum a while back and signed her up for an AA account at the time. She has +22,000 miles that will be expiring this week. I don't think this is enough to qualify for an awards tickets, so I was thinking about using them up some how. I know I could get a gift certificate for her through points.com, but none seem worth it.
I did read on another thread that these might be able to be transferred to my Diner's Club points account. But I think these will be transferred at a rate of 2 miles for 1 point. Is this correct?
Does anyone have suggestions on how I can get the best bang for the buck?

Welcome to FlyerTalk, JM84!
Although your original question has been diverted a bit, you've received some good advice above on how to prevent those miles from expiring and on how to accrue the additional miles you need for an AA award. Your thread has now been merged into the consolidated thread on this topic, and there are many other options upthread.
You can also check out our FAQ for links to the wiki Non-Air Miles page and another related thread on how to prevent your miles from expiring without thinking about it:
• How do I keep my miles from expiring?
I just donated 100 miles to "miles for kids" through the AA website, but they did not post. I thought these posted immediately. Did I do something wrong or does it take a little while to post?
Tried this a couple of weeks ago and it appeared to do the trick. Used -very- few miles, no cost, etc. Thx for the tip
Programs: NW Gold. I gave Citi a $200b bailout and all I got was this free flight.

such as?
anything involving buying, transferring, gifting, or sharing miles is fast but has a fee of ~$25-50 involved.
anything involving flying, hotel stays, or rental cars is fast but involves the cost of the product.
anything involving a partner (shopping, magazines, etc) is cheap but takes potentially several weeks and one's account expiration is at the mercy of a third party.
Donating miles can be done for as few as 1 mile (though I did 70, generous me ), and should appear within 2 weeks per AA policy.
So what is the cheaper and faster option than what I described?

70 miles deducted for donation to Kids in Need within 24 hours of donation. Account expiration deferred for 18 months. Definitely fast, and seemingly a sure thing, for those in future need.

How fast does it need to be? I usually recommened the cost free signup at points.com.
I also don't thnk of miles from a hotel stay or car rental as costing me money. I get the same rate at the hotel if I don't get the miles.

how long til the points.com points post?
The hotel/flight/car rental may not be anything 'extra' but if you don't have an upcoming hotel/flight/car rental before expiration (say, in the next 30 days - not unlikely for someone who's already had no activity in their account for 17 months) - then it doesn't help or the cost of such a transaction would indeed be 'extra.' For example, I have zero travel planned in the next 7 weeks, which would have been too late for the account.
