I wouldn't even think twice about taking the chance of not re-qualifying for EXP. I would do a couple MR flights just to be sure there wasn't any confusion.
I lost EXP a couple years ago by like 30k so couldn't really do anything about it I was mostly flying to MEX from DFW and even though it was weekly, it just doesn't add up. An Australia trip and a Korea trip I had to take on United instead of AA did me in.
I can't tell you how horrible it is to drop down to peon status. I even lost all 8 eVIPs because I didn't have anything to use them on the previous year since DFW-MEX is considered a sticker (free EXP) upgrade trip. The worst part was that starting mid March I had to fly to Europe every 2-4 weeks as a Platinum for the rest of the year. Luckily that got my EXP status back fairly fast.

Wow... ok.
Or a member that has read the stickies and the FAQs but couldn't find the topic when he checked, and hasn't ever gotten close before so never saw the previous posts on the topic in prior years.
Anyway, I probably could've added color saying that literally every weekend from now until Dec 31 I'm traveling, so it'll be much harder to just take a 500 mile flight to LA and back. I'm instead going to try re-routing itineraries (e.g., instead of SFO-JFK, fly SFO-LAX-JFK).
Since there's overwhelming advice not to chance it, I'm going to take that route.

You might be able to do this for only $50 by doing same day confirmed change.

Oh, sorry. You didn't say you had read the stickies and the FAQs but couldn't find the topic there. Probably because the link is cleverly disguised with the title "Requalifying if I am short a few miles/points/segments." Since there are 9 threads linked in the section on AAdvantage (Elite) Status, it would be pretty easy to miss in there even if reading carefully.
