I agree 100%. With those deep discounted fares out of DFW to Austin, San Antonio, or where ever, I would sleep much better by being 300 miles over than 200 miles short. Oh yes, you have to get back, so you are 800 miles over. Then you don't worry about it.
Similar scenario for my wife; I've got my PLT and nowhere near EXP, but at the moment my wife is 475 points from qualifying EXP (and nowhere near the miles).
Can anyone advise the best ticket from NYC to ensure the points to cover it? I know that a flight has a minimum award of 500 miles, but are these ELITE points as well or does she need 500 BIS miles to get the EXP?
Thanks
HC
All you need is ONE AA (or AS) segment to anywhere. This will get you the 500 minimum Q-Points for guaranteed qualification. Every AA flight of <500 miles will give you 500 Q-points and 500 q-miles. As advised, read through the stickies here and the aa.com website for specific qualifying info.
What about me? at the end of the year I should have 63K miles, any chance I could be bumped up to EXP? If I call and make a fuss and tell that they will lose thousands of dollars of my business if they don't, will they upgrade me?
I'll have about 147K at the end of the year. Will they comp me to PLT for the following year since I'm very close (in case the soft landing goes away)?

Is this a serious question. 1) nothing similar between being 5000 miles short and 475 pts short. 2) I cant imagine someone being 475 points short and not knowing how to get them...
STICKY?????are you there
The point was that this was my WIFE who is at that level, not me, AA is not my main carrier, so I popped over here to ask a question in a similar thread rather than waste everyone's space with a new one. She travels for business, pays no attention to these things (I've always got enough miles in my account for our leisure travel and all her travel is booked by her company) so when I saw where she was I said I would look into it.
Not fully understanding the system of AA Q-points vs. Q-miles vs. butt-in-seat I asked a question to a group of people who are interested in this topic or they would not have read this post. Some people were kind enough to actually answer the question, and to them I say thanks.

Does anyone know if AA rounds up at all?
I'd hate to have to do a mileage run for 200 miles...
Look on the bright side. You will qualify for AA's Elite Bonus for high end Gold (40,000-49,999 miles) for your choice of (IIRC) 5000 miles, or a set of elite luggage tags, or 1-day Admirals Club pass, or 2x 500-miler upgrade "stickers".
Given this bonus promo, I anticipate that AA will have a great excuse to not allow ANY grace to make the next level as it will also make them have to go into the system to try to head off you getting those extra benefits too.

Thanks for the reality check!
Well, that isn't what I wanted to hear, but it makes sense. If I was down by 1K for EXP qualification, I'd make another trip, but being down by 5K is going to be more difficult (for me at least).
Been on FT for years...but if my memory serve me, aren't he Grace questions starting a little early this year? Usually it is right after Thanksgiving.
Can we make a new topic a sticky? The answer is fly the miles/segments/points and don't ask about grace. That way we can focus on more important things. Hey, what ever happened to the egg wrap anyways?????
Seems like AA are a lot more rigorous with their requalification than QF. I hear of QF platinum (top tier QF) being comped for people who havent even requal'd for gold...
I guess my question regarding being comped up to EXP after having 80K qpoints in 2.5 months is probably a non-starter then
