You'll get a much better answer if you post this in the AA forum, but the consistent answer seems to be that there is no "close enough" when qualifying for EXP. The only sure way to get it is to meet the qualifications.
Similar scenario for my wife; I've got my PLT and nowhere near EXP, but at the moment my wife is 475 points from qualifying EXP (and nowhere near the miles).
Can anyone advise the best ticket from NYC to ensure the points to cover it? I know that a flight has a minimum award of 500 miles, but are these ELITE points as well or does she need 500 BIS miles to get the EXP?

Is this a serious question. 1) nothing similar between being 5000 miles short and 475 pts short. 2) I cant imagine someone being 475 points short and not knowing how to get them...

Does close count in FF programs as it does in horseshoes and granades?

I hope to never be EXP (unless at a EQP to EQM ratio of 1.5) and can't imagine doing an MR, but if I was at 90k + I would take a day off work and do an extra trip to get there.
Actually, not true in the past...but I wouldn't count on it. People have reported some "close enough" experiences. Certainly not 5K miles short. 475 points (with, apparently, a high points/miles ratio) would have done it in the past. That said, don't chance it since any flight on AA will garner 500 points and Bingo! EXP.
Actually, you could do 100,000 even. Someone posted a couple of days ago who had hit it exactly. no need to do a mileage run to move from 100,000 to 100,001.
In the past, when there has been a grace, has it been miles only? What about segments or points?
Since this question was never answered, it should be noted that the grace AA has given has been on miles and points only. I don't recall that they've ever given a grace on segments.

What about me? at the end of the year I should have 63K miles, any chance I could be bumped up to EXP? If I call and make a fuss and tell that they will lose thousands of dollars of my business if they don't, will they upgrade me?
Undoubtedly, they will upgrade you... I am not sure to what, but rest assured, they will upgrade you. Maybe on an RJ.
As to segments, I have not seen this reported here (not that it hasn't been reported, I just don't recollect it.) And this is the first year EXP can requal on segments where we woud find out if there's a grace on that or not (I would not want to bet on a pity requalification in any case, unless I were a high EQP requalifier and were just a tad short, e.g. within hundreds, not thousands, of miles / points of requal, and that isn't a sure thing.)

You're kidding, right? (I hope so, but I'm just making sure.)
