I am planning a couple of trips so I just checked November and January. I logged in first then checked seat availability. It shows plenty of seats up front and would allow me to reserve them and ticket.
Are you saying that after I did all that, AA would take my seats away? That would be pretty outrageous and deserving some emails and phone calls.
I'm outbound to SNN on November 10, returning Nov 11. I've still got a seat up front on both legs. BOS-SNN appears full, no other seats available while the return has three open. I'll be irked if I'm booted out, I picked BOS-SNN over ORD-DUB for the ability to get a seat up front.

I'm pretty much in the same boat, flying Dec 10 and 11. Right now, still showing up front in both directions.

Unless someone produces evidence that this practice is going-on at BOS and MAN, then I am inclined to think this is being driven by the SNN station. If that is the case, it most definately merits being elevated to Customer Relations. 150 Euros is not worth pissing off an EXP, PLT or GLD member.

The only reason why I selected BOS-SNN for a MR was the availability of F class seats (for Y prices).
What can you do if they take away your prereserved seats ?
Totally legal. The fine print does say that seat assignments are not guaranteed. Unfortunately, other than making a scene (which is probably not going to help you and could result in you being denied the right to fly), there's not much to do at the airport if they won't budge.
I was surprised to see the offer for seats in rows 1-6 for 150 euros on my SNN-BOS flight two weeks ago. I guess they didn't have alot of takers as there were 8 empty seats in rows 1-6, and the rest of the plane was full. I didn't get bumped out of my 3E seat and it was nice having the seat next to me open. Kicking elites out of rows 1-6 must be recent decision.
Also, 6E had a sign on it saying "Crew Rest Seat." on the SNN-BOS flight but not on the BOS-SNN flight.

I have seen the placards on the counters at MAN offering the "upgrades" for GB£100. Whether or not anyone is ever bumped i don't know, not me so far and hopefully not for my 2 trips this month
As a few others have posted, if they want to change the policy prospectively, that's fine with me-- I'm not nuts about it, bit it's understandable IMHO, get the $$ where you can.
However, to do what's been described here-- assign seats up front and then unceremoniously kick people out at check-in is utterly asinine and ridiculously un-customer-friendly.
