You're right on 1 and 2. Your last assertment is a matter of perception. It benefits those who take that trip anyway - but probably not enough to encourage mileage running to, say, St. Pierre des Corps.

I will be travelling using award ticket between ORD and CDG. Do I qualify for double miles on SNCF, if ticket is not a paid one.
So does this double the 500 minimum or does it double the underlying miles, after which the 500 minimum is applied? I.e. for CDG-XDB (Lille), are we getting 1000 miles or the 500 minimum obtained by multiplying the actual mileage of 111 by 2 and applying the 500 miles minimum to the result of 222?
Oh, and by the way, the 500 miles minimum is no longer guaranteed in writing (see this thread)
