"American Airlines has launched a special reservations desk providing options for customers affected by bad weather or other major delays.
The special desk - Off-Schedule Operations (OSO) - allows customers at the airport to call a special toll-free number to reschedule their travel without standing in line. The desks will now be available at all of the carrier's domestic locations.
The OSO support desks are activated only when needed." (Travel Industry release)
We recommend using this number only for true OSO incidents.
Naturally you should be able to speak that other language as well.
If they have a pig latin line, I am going to be all over it. "My lightfay is layeddecay"
As a quick update, the weather guys are now reporting that snow/sleet ends in one more hour and the temps will rapidly climb into the mid 40s. So, hopefully all of you late PM travelers will do OK
FYI I believe if you enter your EXP # in the phone tree it will redirect you to Dallas, so you might want to just enter nothing until you get to a human.
So, looks like this will cause huge problems in the afternoon flights too. The deicing trucks are out in full force as the humidity is very high and ice is forming much faster than expected on airplane surfaces
Could someone more familiar with the process explain this to me
I was on a 7 AM flight out of DFW, aircraft started boarding on time. From what I could tell, FA's and pilots were there. About 2/3rd of the aircraft was boarded/seated when they canceled the flight and kicked us all out.
If someone knows or if not, please speculate, why the aircraft did not get a go. Was it due to ground issues? Also what leads them to immediately cancel vs. wait for a bit.
Just out of curiosity. Thanks.

After experiencing all the fun and games at DFW on Christmas day due a "snow storm" which was anything but and now seeing this thread (and having seen quite a few others like it) two things occur to me:
1) This type of weather isn't that uncommon in Dallas at certain times of year
2) Despite (1) DFW seems remarkably incapable of dealing with this weather when it turns up. And this is far milder weather than a lot of other US airports get while remaining functional.

This year is definitely an anomaly with all the cold weather/snow across the US. Snow accumulation definitely feels abnormal - where I live, the Christmas snow lasted a few days. As a result, it isnt too surprising that they don't have a major snow contingency plan built around several snow days/ice storms.
Additionally, driving to the airport was a disaster. It is possible that they were short staffed due to employees being late/stuck.
At the same time, with the northeast as home, this is really not a lot of snow.

2012 was the warmest, and most extreme (or second most extreme in some reports) weather year, ostensibly as a result of global climate change. While the planet is warming, overall, the change in the temperature of the seas is causing shifts in the weather patterns. This is what results in some not typically cold areas to be colder than normal. It seems that 2013 is following in the footsteps of 2012.

No this type of weather it not rare, but it is not common. This year is weird - I live in Arkansas where we've had more snow than Chicago this season. We're in the same position as DFW - one snow/ice event every couple of years on average doesn't mean we know how to handle it.

OK, DFW should spend 10's of millions of dollars to get the same equipment and staffing as ORD has for winter weather. We should absolutely pay people to sit around for years so that DFW is prepared for the handful of snow days per DECADE.

I think that's it. DFW has this kind of weather very occasionally, and they are not going to invest huge amounts of money in more de-icing crews and equipment, snow cats, 'dozers, etc. than they have for the occasional storm - unlike, say, MSP, where snow is SOP.
