DFW Storm and other weather problems Christmas week 2012

Seems like a bad weather day coming for DFW, unfortunately. At least two diversions to AUS already (681 TPA and 659 FLL).

Good luck both to those trying to get places with/to see loved ones and those working out there today!

Here's the current NWS advisory. Even if the flights are ok, the roads to and from the airport could get dicey this evening. Stay safe, everyone.

... WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 9 AM THIS MORNING TO MIDNIGHT CST TONIGHT...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN FORT WORTH HAS ISSUED A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY FOR SNOW... WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 9 AM THIS MORNING TO MIDNIGHT CST TONIGHT.

* TIMING... RAIN IS EXPECTED TO CHANGE OVER TO SNOW FROM WEST TO EAST THIS AFTERNOON. SNOW WILL END FROM WEST TO EAST DURING THE EVENING HOURS.

* LOCATION... THIS WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY STATEMENT IS FOR THE COUNTIES OF STEPHENS... PALO PINTO... PARKER... TARRANT... DALLAS AND ROCKWALL.

* MAIN IMPACT... SNOWFALL ACCUMULATIONS BETWEEN 1 AND 2 INCHES.

* OTHER IMPACTS... NORTHWEST WINDS OF 25 TO 35 MPH WITH HIGHER GUSTS WILL RESULT IN AREAS OF BLOWING SNOW. THIS MAY RESULT IN VISIBILITY RESTRICTIONS OF LESS THAN A HALF MILE. BRIDGES AND OVERPASSES WILL BE THE FIRST TO ICE OVER... BUT SOME SURFACE ROADS MAY BECOME ICY BY LATE AFTERNOON.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

BE PREPARED FOR ICY SPOTS ON AREA ROADS AND HIGHWAYS BY CHRISTMAS EVENING. CHECK ROAD CONDITIONS BEFORE DEPARTING IF YOU MUST TRAVEL. IF TRAVEL IS NECESSARY... DRIVE WITH EXTREME CAUTION. SOME LIGHT ACCUMULATIONS OF SNOW AND ICE ARE POSSIBLE... ESPECIALLY ON ELEVATED SURFACES. BRIDGES AND OVERPASSES WILL BE THE FIRST LOCATIONS WHERE ICY SPOTS MAY DEVELOP.

My guess its the wind that's a problem--1 to 2 inches of snow, in the NE USA at least, would never be a problem.

You haven't ever lived in North Texas, have you? I used to split time between NYC and DFW. I remember one specific January where I left NYC with about 8" of snow on the ground from the night before, got on a moderately delayed flight and flew to DFW where about 2.5" had fallen but was melting. The radio kept referring to the snowball as a "blizzard" and the scene was complete panic....grocery stores out of water, gas stations out of fuel, etc.

DFW likes to get bent out of shape about the smallest ice/snowfall. In the 30+ years I've lived in and around North Texas it has never ceased to amuse me.

Ha ha. Funny guy. In Dallas when it snows, many crazy things happen.

1. The grocery store shelves are sold out of bread, milk, and eggs, looking like its been looted. Even for a less than 24 hour event, like this one.

2. Many drivers will drive faster, in order to get home sooner! This also applies to torrential rain storms. Pick up trucks with no weight in the back practice this in higher proportions.

3. Expect long lines at gas stations prior, as everyone in advance of the snow event will fill their tanks.

4. Local TV will go to 10-15 minute updates, interrupting programming, with the the entire weather team in the studio, being very, very serious, and 10's of very Ernest reporters, reporting from very local locations by satellite. The weather team will constantly tell the viewers that they will be in the studio for the entire event!

5. HD/Loews will experience a run on shovels of all kinds, making that section look looted also. Also looking looted will be the area that has the electric space heaters, in case the power goes off (Don't ask!).

Having spent the 1st 14 years of my life in Syracuse, I just shake my head.

Just sayin'.

In my experience it's an even split between people driving 5mph and people driving 70mph with nothing in between. Drivers here are nuts.

Yeah, yeah. Make all the fun you want. At least we live here and not in Yankee land.

@AA996 then AA642

A Christmas morning landing of AA996 was a bit rough, but we had a pretty smooth ride overall. AA642 was originally delayed for two hours, but we are in the air now heading to Boston. Let's hope everything goes well, as we have to get a meeting first then drive all the way to Albany for a Christmas dinner.

I would love to post a decent reply, but my wife is making me get gas, a shovel and snowblower from lowes and get enough milk and eggs to last through the rapture. I am texting this at 70 miles per hour in my pickup truck.

Rain and thunder all night, and I mean all night. Must have gotten backed up just because of visibility and longer trail intervals. Still cloudy but much higher ceiling, so I suppose catching up. Right now no reason crews can't get to the airport. This afternoon is another question.

If it ices I'd rather be in New York too. This place is spread out and most major roads are elevated at many points. Does not take much to get automotivly ugly here. Apply the standard Texas credo that anything can be solved by additional horsepower applied by a RWD V-8 and we're talking a body shop dream in no time. Just hope its a clear decision in the morning when its time for work.

Put a few bales of hay in the bed of that truck. it will handle better.

I was wondering who that was that just blew by me doing 70 in the right lane as I was cruising down the left lane at a safe and sane 15 mph. No precip here at the moment but since there is precip within a 100 nm radius one can never be too safe...

Spot on. DFW drivers suck, but not in any consistent or predictable way.

No, I just pass through every now and then.

That's because we are the most important people in the world. it is up to everyone else to conform to our movements. We know where we are going. That is all that matters.
