Would AA appreciate a call to cancel a portion of free travel?

So I'm using an international award LHR-JFK-MCO and was going to use the free stopover at the US gateway city (JFK) and then take the second flight a week later. As it turns out, I can't spend that much time when I arrive in New York and have bought a separate ticket (on another airline) for an earlier date (as free option not available the date I need) to get me to MCO. I think the right thing to do is call and let them know I only need LHR-JFK so they will have a FC seat open for JFK-MCO. Has anyone done this prior to departure for first leg? Obviously I don't want anything to change on my LHR-JFK leg so is there any chance pf screw up or to be safe should I just call during the week window between JFK and MCO?

Thanks

Why not push JFK-MCO a bit, then see what happens. Wo knows, maybe a big schedule change takes place.

If you're not interested, I'd call.

Is your ticket one way or round trip? If the latter, you may have more of an issue regardless of when you call because your ticket will need to be reissued, which could incur a change fee. If it's a one way, go ahead and call. If the agent tells you that cancelling JFK-MCO is a problem, don't make the change, and then call again after you fly LHR-JFK.

Perhaps you could use it later. Since it is an award ticket with a free stopover, I would try to change the date for the second leg to a later date that is still within the one year from ticketing window.

Nice of you to take into consideration the fact that the open seat might be used by someone else - a nice change from most posts!

I would agree that calling AA is the best approach and see if you can change it to a later date or cancelling the segment.

I'd do this too. As a courtesy to your fellow travelers who may be seeking awards, choose a low-demand flight, like a Wednesday morning, as far in the future as possible.

This is what I was trying to say, along with the chance that, if the OP reschedules and then AA makes a drastic change to the flight s/he books, perhaps there's a chance to get a mileage reimbursement for it.

Given that LHR-JFK is the same miles requirement as LHR-MCO I would not see any reason why there would be a refund for a schedule change

Send a request to revenue management to open the dates you need.

The OP stated he had already purchased a ticket for the earlier flights, so how would this help?

Last week I called AA about the same situation. The wanted to charge me $150/ticket to chop off the last leg of the award. Is this correct?

The seat will be used by someone, whether you cancel or not. Probably just a free upgrade, as there is no guarantee that your cancelled seat will be released for use as a mileage ticket.

Yup; changing the routing incurs a $150 fee. To the OP, I would just not inform AA and let the segment drop. Start informing them and they may want to charge the change fees

You are, of course, correct.

I should stop posting after being awake 40+ hours.
