On Friday at MCO a contractor was checking any questionable carryons in the sizer and not being very permissive. I'm talking about the full "it took you too much effort to put it in" treatment. There seemed to be only one contractor, and she wasn't working my flt, which was fortunate....my bag fits in the bin easily, but not so much for the sizer. She seemed to be harassing FC and Y pax equally. Hopefully this is not a trend.
This was at the flight door, and not the security line? I have seen random TSA searches at the flight, and there have been reports of GAs doing what you say....but I've not (yet) heard of at-the-flight bag-sizer contractors. I don't like it if they really do the "took too much effort" thing for a bag that fits.

Yes, this was at the flight door, not at security. Unfortunately, maybe I'm reporting a first The "too much effort" thing is definitely BS...to much subjectivity.

ORD, SJU, and MIA. However, I've never heard the "too much effort line" I think they tend to pick up a lot more this time of year, holiday travelers etc.

It's total BS if it fits in the bin. But lately I've seen a lot of kettles in F that think that they can put a Cadillac in the bin just b/c they're in F (sometimes b/c of IRROPS even though they have no status)

Unfortunately, that's not the agreement that AA have set up with TSA. Each airline gets to decide on their sizing rules, but then they have to stick by them. AA are using the sizer, not the bins since they vary.
Even using the sizer, though, I think the "effort" thing is the real BS.

Yes, I was specifically referring to the effort issue.

FIFY. TSA has no authority/jurisdiction over the size or number of articles you are allowed to bring on the plane.

TSA doesn't care, but those contract agents don't work for TSA; they work for the airlines. The airlines want to collect checked baggage fees, so they care very deeply about how much stuff pax bring onto the aircraft.
As long as your luggage is compliant (within the stated dimensions posted online), it shouldn't matter what the sizer does or does not do. If the contractor is being annoying, pull up the website on your device and invite the agent to measure your bag's dimensions, including wheel protrusions. At that point, she probably will give up and let you proceed.

Yeah, I knew that they didn't have jurisdiction, but I thought that they were the ones that wanted to make sure that, whatever the airline decided, it was followed properly. Perhaps that was the FAA
As a reminder for all our customers boarding an American Airlines flight, American Airlines will strictly enforce the carry-on baggage policies. The AA FAA approved carry-on baggage allowance, applies for any oversize and/or excess carry-on bag discovered on board one of our aircrafts by the FAA is considered an occurrence and is subject to a large fine.
All AA personnel at the gate will be using the Bag Sizer to determine if any item exceeds the allowance and must be checked. In this case the customer is required to pay the checked bag charge at the gate.
Due to high carry-on volume and limited overhead space, customers may need to check their carry-on bag at the gate. In this case, the customer will not be required to pay the checked bag charge when it is checked at the gate provided the bag met the required carry-on size and quantity limitations.
If the carry-on bag is checked, the customer will need to pick-up the bag from baggage claim at the final destination (if the customer is making a connection to their final destination, the bag will be connected also).
For additional information on baggage allowance you may refer to our reference Carry-On Allowance carry-on baggage allowance or contact AA Reservations
