Award flight Routing help: SFO to Europe with NYC stopover?

I am thinking of booking an award ticket from SFO to Europe, I would eventually like to end up in Germany but this is more of a personal trip, so flying into nearby airport or even further airport is an option, so long as I can connect with train or ryanair flight.

I think open jaw is still allowed, is that correct as well?

I was wondering if I can force a stopover in NYC to visit a friend for a day or two? I booked an award ticket before but also remembers that the rules has changed. Also, which airport should I fly into? It seems that BA flights has ridiculous tax so I feel like flights operated by AA would be more desirable.

date: second half of november to early half of december.

thanks!

Open jaw is allowed. Stopovers are allowed at the international gateway in N. America so for your case JFK could work well. Fly SFO-JFK on AA and then stopover, continue JFK-LHR-Germany on either AA/BA or BA only. The BA fuel surcharge will be especially steep if you fly TATL with BA, and not worth it if only flying coach.

Awards are no longer round-trip, so open jaw doesn't apply as each direction is a separate award. But yes, you can construct open-jaw journeys with them, with as many jaws as you want, as well as circle trips...although the number of awards needed (and associated mileage) increases per each open jaw...but that's too much info, isn't it?

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8530/5.0.0.1030 Profile/MIDP-2.1 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/417)

IB = Iberia Airlines
AY = Finnair

Both are AA partners, but neither can be booked on an award at aa.com; you must call AA to do so.

Has anyone noticed Air Berlin is charging crazy fuel surchages for trans-atlantic flights? I just tried looking at an award on Airberlin.com, and it's $400 in fuel surcharges - US - Germany...

This is the AA forum. AA does not collect a surcharge when redeeming miles on AB flights.
