Optimizing AA stop-over on LIM-JFK award ticket
I am going to Machu Picchu and mostly used BA Avios to get there and back from JFK. Unfortunately, there was no availability on the last leg, LIM-JFK, so I decided to pay 60K AA miles for anytime award for LIM-MIA-JFK routing. Not ideal, but those things happen.
The other day I was checking one-way price for MIA-JFK flight and noticed it's only $100. It got me thinking if I should change MIA-JFK part to a stopover sometime in the future and pay $100 out of pocket. It will also require getting to MIA for that trip, so say another $100-150.
Looking for suggestions where to go using this stopover:
1) Hawaii: should I route to HNL or OGG? Which carrier has the best premium cabin? AA?
2) Vancouver (get some skiing)
3) Cool destination within USA.
It doesn't matter which carrier has the best premium cabin: on an AAnytime award, you are only permited to fly on AA.
If you want to fly to HNL or OGG, fly via DFW. AA has lie-flat sleeper seats from DFW to those two destinations.
Unless you are EXP (I can't view your profile on my BlackBerry), I believe that you would also be subject to a $150 fee to re-deposit and re-claim your award.

re: AAnytime Award limitation to AA only: I learned something new today. Thank you.
I'm only lowly PL, but I was told that changes to origin/destination (as long as it's the same region), travel dates are free.
