AA and WS / WestJet (Canada) Partnership
AA codeshares, earning and redeeming miles, etc.

AA established a codeshare relationship with WS / WestJet (Canada) Feb 2011 and Award Miles (RDM) earning on certain fares June 2012.

Earn miles:

Regions

Earn AAdvantage® miles for travel on WestJet within Canada and between Canada and:

Caribbean
Mexico
U.S.

Earn miles

Earn AAdvantage miles when you fly on WestJet marketed and operated flights as well as WestJet codeshare flights operated by American Airlines. Simply:
  • Buy an eligible published fare ticket booked in an eligible code

  • Fly an eligible route through select Canadian destinations.

  • Specific flights, routes or cities that are excluded from earning miles or award travel are listed as exceptions if applicable.

(Travel to and from Cuba will not earn AA miles.)
AAdvantage 100% Base Miles (for redeemable miles) can be earned on Y, K, V, B, W, Q, L, H, M, P, G, X, D fares on WestJet marketed fares flying on WestJet or AA operated flights as specified above. As always, AA EQM and Bonus Miles can be earned on AA codeshares operated by WS. No status bonus miles are awarded for WS coded flights. Travel ticketed as an American Airlines marketed flight (booked as an AA flight number) and operated by WestJet will earn AAdvantage base miles and elite qualifying miles, points and segments according to the AA mileage accrual chart. AA miles can not be redeemed for awards on WS at this time.

No bonus miles are earned flying WS. AA miles can not be earned flying to or from Cuba at this time.

AAdvantage miles can not be redeemed for awards on WestJet at this time.

Members posting in this thread in the WestJet | WestJet Rewards forum say it has taken 3~4 days for miles to post, but some say they do not post without intervention up to 50% of the time.

Ready2Go lists more on OLCI and seat selection below in Post 11.

AA and WS expands relationship to earn miles on eligible fares

Valid for flights on/after June 27, 2012
Economy Class Y, V, B, Q, L, M, P, G, X, D 100% RDM

Not as great as AS' EQM eligibilities but any way to earn miles intra-Canada (i.e. YVR-YYC) or more direct flights from the US to Canada (i.e. LAX-YYC) is a good thing. ^

You can already earn EQMs on LAX-YYC/YEG if you book the codeshare

OLCI and seat selection on WestJet codeshares?

AA cannot allocate seats on Westjet codeshares. WestJet charges for advance seat selection (though only $5-15), with open selection at OLCI 24 hours before departure.

I have got my booking reference from WestJet, but does anyone have experience of whether this can be used for OLCI (together with seat selection) on the WestJet site?

WS-non earning fares

For anyone using WS to earn AA miles:
I searched for a flight to the US using a TA.
The TA went on skylinkcanada.com
The flight that I wanted to the US was in S class (but it was cheaper than AA by $19!)
So, make sure to check booking class!
(Unfortunately I can't see bkg class on WS.com)

These are the eligible fare codes for WS flights:

WestJet Eligible Fare Codes

If it's an AA Code Share flight with an AA flight number booked through AA, you earn the same miles etc. as if it had been an AA flight.

I'm aware but S isn't there.
I'm actually overseas but I am emailing the TA in YVR.

If the bucket you're booking into isn't listed, it won't earn miles. TBH, your best bet is to book the codeshare when possible to ensure consistent earn rates, with EQMs as a nice bonus.

I've gone ahead and merged your post into the existing thread on this topic.

I am probably going to need to go to YEG later this year. Do I understand this correctly that as long as I book the WS flights as a AA codeshare, I will get EQMs? Or is that only true of the LAX-YEG flight?

AA codeshare will earn as if it were AA metal.

Too late to help the OP, I'm sure, but because this question was never answered, I will answer it. Yes, an AA codeshare pax who has his/her WestJet booking reference can do OLCI and select seats 24 hours before departure.

The WestJet booking reference is not the same as the AA locator, but any AA phone agent can provide it.

Doesn't look like it.
The only use of redeeming on WS though would be to reach 2nd tier Canadian cities (YYJ/YEG/YHZ/YWG come to mind)
