can somebody please explain about the upgrading, I have an AA advantage miles acount and have points in it.
we are flying manchester UK to Chicago next month and have just noticed against the flight there is green writing saying
If your upgrade request cannot be confirmed prior to check-in, you will be given an opportunity to be added to the airport standby list to continue standing by. In order to be added to the airport standby list, please ensure you have the appropriate number of upgrades in your account prior to check-in.
If there are multiple passengers in your reservation and each passenger will be paying for their upgrade separately, please call AAdvantage Reservations to ensure your request is handled appropriately.
500-mile Upgrades are not valid for travel to/from Europe, South America or Asia. Contact AA to request an upgrade award.

can somebody explain what this means
Hi, Aurelia. Welcome to Flyertalk.
There are three possible ways to upgrade on AA, using 500-mile upgrades (does not apply on transatlantic flights), using miles + copay, and using systemwide upgrades (which, if you had any, you would already know about). So for your purposes, one way, miles + copay.
There is a thread at the top of the forum titled FAQ: American Airlines and AAdvantage - Please check here first! It contains a ton of information on topics that newcomers all want to know about. I highly recommend it. Not surprisingly, there is a lot of information about upgrades there. Feel free to read the answers to this question and your other questions there.

This message is automatically generated and relates (primarily) to AA passengers who have status and are flying domestically. It does not relate to int'l upgrades.
To upgrade from coach to business on your flight would require 25,000 miles + 350.00US/per person and is subject to availability.
Many thanks guys for replying to my post, I understand now, we do have some domestic flights to whilst we are in the USA, will have a read on how I can spend my miles points.
