OP here - I picked up cards this evening around 7:00 and they still had some left (I was glad there were still some left since I didn't have a chance to purchase them yesterday). They guy in the pickup cage (were the valuables are stored) said that the store only got a limited amount and that it seemed like a trial. However, they had LOTS of those giant cards that you pick up in the warehouse, so it seems strange that they would have an apparently small stock overall. Hopefully, the trial goes well!
Clarification: The "limit of 8" on the item price sign in the warehouse that I referred to in the original post refers to the number of cards that can be used on one AA transaction.
Programs: My primary programs are AA EXP, Hilton Gold, National Executive. Also SPG Gold, Hertz Gold, AS & BA.

I don't know how it works in every state, but in every state I am familiar with, sales tax is added when you buy something with the gift card, not when you buy the gift card. Thus, if you buy a $10 Starbucks card, they just put $10 on the card and you pay them $10, then when you buy your latte they charge the cost of the drink plus normal tax to your gift card.
When Hyatt did a similar deal with Costco last year, one of the advantages people found was that the cards were apparently returnable for an indefinite period of time, no questions asked, under Costco's policy.
In fact after the Hyatt gift cards were discontinued at Costco, the way some people were able to score more months later was when someone returned some.
Any thoughts on whether these AA cards will similarly be returnable?

Danville had a huge rack of cardboard advertising cards for AA near the camera section up front. When I left at 8:10pm their computer showed they still had 10 in stock, though they cannot guarantee that number is accurate. I was actually surprised to see how few they had in stock in the vault to begin with.
My travel needs for the next year are taken care of. I'll store them next to my remaining Hyatt gift checks that I still haven't finished off, also bought at Costco.
Thank you, cwpfly for the initial post, and lKTyS7UPY for the list of outlets. I had checked Vacaville this afternoon but they're not on your list which appeared after I was back home.
