But are they simply going to do this by creating a new kind of (hard to tell apart from the others) red blob to put on their "where we fly" maps that means "metal neutral, even though not AA metal"?

Looks like they will order two 777-300ERs for delivery in late 2012:

Here come the threads:

1) Will my flight be on a 777-200 or a 777-300?
2) Seat assignment got changed

etc.

Why only 2? How many new routes can you open up with 2?

I was thinking the same thing.

The release says additional details are not released yet so I can only hope its options or something for more.

Just thinking out loud here and this would be a scheduling nightmare, but I wonder if you add one incremental route, which could be flown by both -200 and -300, you then give yourself some international schedule flexibility to deal with the next "snowpocalypse/volcanic ash/etc..." CX was able to clear their LHR backlog very quickly, iirc, because of size and flexibility...

Definitely. If you can't travel when you want, you don't stay with the airline.

2 new aircraft=1 new daily route. 2 of one a/c type would be quite strange as not very cost effective. But more may be on the way:

Configuration?

The other obvious question is what configuration will these have? Will it:

i) be a stretched -200ER, ie more of everything

ii) have Premium Economy

iii) will it even have an F cabin

I guess these questions depend on the role - are they intended to displace -200's on slot constrained routes?

So no new WB's until 2013 deployment, and only two, for one long route and not every day over a one year time frame due to maintenance.
My guess is some special deal between AA and Boeing due to the very very late availability of 787-9.

As others have pointed out, an order of just 2 77Ws seems very odd.

The 2nd link provided says they think its the tip of the iceberg. But not only that, this to me would indicate that some of the -200s would be changed to -300s.

2 of a type is basically useless.
