EVIP: 2 requests w/same status & timestamp, divergent waitlist ranking & result
Long-time lurker. I want to thank everyone here for providing the roadmap to get to the promised land.
I purchased a ticket for myself and my fiancé PDX-DFW-LHR. We are both EXP. Called to split the PNRs and request systemwide upgrades for both with instructions that they should clear individually if only one upgrade is available.
She cleared 10 days in advance (availability was J7+ and still 11 empty seats on the seatmap). In the subsequent days I watched both J and empty seats in business dwindle to zero, including some instances where Y seats seemed to open up at the same time J seats disappeared.
I called the EXP desk and confirmed that I was still on the waitlist and nothing was unusual with my reservation.
I cleared PDX-DFW into X class the morning of. Upon arrival at DFW, I was #3 on the waitlist to LHR.
So: How can 2 EXPs with identical request timestamps on the same flight have such varying places on the waitlist? It seems incredibly unlikely that 2+ other EXPs requested upgrades during the 30 seconds it took the agent to switch from the first PNR to the second.

How do you know that any other upgrades were cleared after your girlfriend?
I think he is assuming that the other two on the waitlist when he arrived at DFW were both awaiting eVIP upgrades, not miles and copay upgrades. He is wondering how his GF cleared and he is #3 on the list.

#1 on the waitlist cleared at the gate. The others (including me) did not.
I have read that miles & copay are processed ahead of evip requests at European airports, but haven't seen anyone imply this would be the case at a domestic airport. The lounge AAngel told me there were 8 EXPs on the waitlist, so presumably they would be using evips if they had any left.

Theoretical possibility:
you & gf were NOT the first EXPs to request upgrades on the flight, but you WERE the first EXPs to split to individual PNRs and/or allow split upgrades. (Or, said another way, there were other EXPs ahead of you, in groups of 2)
When 1 seat opened, she got it. Nothing else opened as 1 seat, but PAIRS of seats opened later and went to those who came ahead of you.
Or, people who had earlier time of requests came along later and split their requests, both keeping the prior time stamp.
iirc, we've recently seen at least one other tale of a couple traveling together where the upgrades cleared in a weird fashion (I believe the other tale was where a gold cleared before a plat). Erik, can you write into AA and ask about how/why your girlfriend cleared and you didn't? I don't think a politely worded request would be amiss. It may very well be the reason that CO FF stated, but if it's something else (a tech prob, a prob of splitting PNRs, etc.) then it would be great info for us FT'ers to have .
