So is the new C on IAD-NRT the same as on a 3-class aircraft? I'm assuming these are the lie-flat seats (although not horizontal) and not recliner-type seats as indicated by seatguru.
I've had an award flight booked for this Sept. in C since last year and now I'm wondering whether I should try to find something via ORD. Are there any significant differences between the 77W and 772 (assuming C for both flights)? This is actually going to be my first flight on ANA, so looking for some advice from the experts.

On 772, it's the same C seat as the 77W. I've been on one of these 3 cabin 772 and can confirm.

Ditto to what people are saying. As I was getting off that plane back in January, it looked like most of the pillows, even in business class, were sitting there unused and unloved.
It would make sense fiscally for them to drop F service, especially given the lack of people I ever see up there, but I still think the 787 is a definite possibility. Looking at the chart for the aircraft changes, it says its a "temporary for FY09" swap, and with them expecting arrival of the 787 soon, plus looking at what has been moved where, I think its a definite possibility.
ANA has been expecting the arrival of the 787 for quite some time. Keep in mind they initially ordered the -3/4 short haul models, so their first few Dreamliners will probably service Asia, and may be a long time before we see a long haul version state side.

And based on Boeing's current track record with the 787, it's going to be a while before the first one is even delivered.
Just flew NH001/002 out last week and returning to IAD today. Outbound was quite empty in C, and PE was a ghost town. Most people had an empty middle (middle 3 of C) and many including me had an empty aisle or window on the side.
Tuesday when I went to confirm my seat on the return (2K -- always choose row 1 or 2 for reasons that will be quite clear) the seat map showed only 1-2-1 seating in rows 1 and 2! I was skeptical despite seeing the 773 at the gate, but when I boarded it was indeed an F-equipped aircraft -- and I therefore had the F seat for the Transpac! Score! The "F" section was full (one guy was brought forward after the door closed -- seemed to be a VIP of some sort) but the part of C that I could view was not completely full. They did close the curtains between "F" and C cabins.
I have to say that apart from the catering (it was definitely C and not F food and wine -- still perfectly fine including the Super Cheeseburger), the service was close to the NH F level despite it being a C-only flight. I consider it an Op-Up of sorts, and it was on a particularly inexpensive fare -- a great value!
When I checked in for NH001 last week, the TA said that going to 2-class was a 'seasonal' change but hinted that it was more the economy that had to pick up rather than the wintry weather.
Has anybody flown this route recently? I'm flying IAD-NRT next week in C and I'm wondering whether they're still doing the occasional equipment swap to a 3-class aircraft as indicated earlier.
Also, will I have access to the ANA lounge at IAD with my boarding pass?

There are no difference between 2 class C and 3 class C, what are you concern about ? Since you had mentioned in the earlier post this is an award ticket, don't think they are going to let you sit in F if it is 3 class as it is not going to happen. They are very strict about who get to sit in F even you ask and beg.
There is no ANA lounge in IAD, NH use AF lounge, when you checkin, they should print you a lounge invite.

When I flew IAD-NRT F a few months back I did not get a lounge invite, I just showed my boarding pass at the lounge.
It's the ANA lounge in the morning, and the AF lounge in the afternoon.
There's a business class side and an F side, the F side is smaller but not really nicer.
The previous time I flew IAD-NRT they were using both sides of the lounge. This last time they had everyone in both first and business using the first side, business was empty.
But really you can pick your own side of the lounge, because regardless of which side you are directed to the two lounges are connected in back via the restrooms. If you're in the business lounge, go to the restroom and walk through to the first side there's no checking credentials on the other side of the restroom...
I'll experience it as the AF lounge for the first time in a month or so, curious differences in food. Honestly not a ton prior to the NRT departure.
The only real positive here is that you board the jetway from the lounge rather than returning back into the terminal.

Not concerned about the C cabin since I already know that they're the same. Just curious whether there is a chance to end up with an F seat since I'm currently confirmed for row 2.
Also, I'm originating at MIA so I don't think they'll be able to provide me with a lounge invite there. Hopefully, I'll be able to access the NH lounge with the BP.

Even if it switch to 3 class, since you are award, you are more likely to bump back to C. Unless you are paying for C, there is very rare chance your seat assignment will stick if it does switch.
Just for your record, the entire month of september have been using 2 class. There are 3 of these 2 class 777 (C/PY/Y), one obvious use as spare, so it is rare to be switched.

After being in F for the last two years among my annual eight trips from IAD-NRT-PVG, I am looking for fully-flat option, right now its going to be either Korean Air or Air Canada for me in 2010. It is sad to leave ANA, but I have no choice.
