ANA to launch female only lavatories on international flights

http://www.ana.co.jp/eng/aboutana/press/index_sm.html

This will be available on all international flights by end of April except on A320 and B737 flights...

Men are only allowed to use this lav under the following circumstances.

Quote:
- When required for safety reasons, just prior to the seat belt sign being turned on during take-off and landing.
- When a passenger is not feeling well and a personal emergency requires such use.
- When there are very few female passengers and the women-only designation has been lifted for the flight.
*An in-flight announcement will be made in such cases.

This sounds suspiciously like a strategy to reduce cabin attendant workload by not cleaning the lavs so much in-flight. If this means the non-segregated lavs turn into lakes, as they tend to do on UA, it's a black mark for NH in my book...

I've never understood gender segregation of single-person bathrooms. It happens in restaurants in Japan too. Drives me nuts when the men's room is occupied and the women's room just sits empty. (In the opposite situation, when the women's room is full with a long line waiting, women often just use the men's room. Of course, if a man tried something like that with the women's room, he'd probably be arrested. )

Oh well, just another reason to switch back to JAL after I get SFC.

Have you tried asking ANA to match your JL status? They might just give you the SFC now? Who knows they might be more willing to match JL status now given all of the recent events. It worths a try.

I hope this discrimination doesn't spread.

Note that it's only one lav that is segregated, and supposedly it is an "aft" lav, so if you are flying in F and C all the time you won't even notice this change.

There are rumours that one will be installed in the First Class toilets of LH's A380.

Airbus A380

Seriously!?!? Let's hope there won't be any turbulence when people are using that...otherwise they'd better install a shower and provide change of clothes

I'm sure there's a deeper reason for making this change. Sexual harassment cases? Too much sex in toilets?

Well cleanliness is probably the main reason. Some guys just don't have good aim

I've just assumed that ANA wouldn't match it. Even if they comped me Platinum status (which only lasts one year), I doubt they'd comp me SFC (which basically lasts for life or until ANA changes the program) if I didn't fly the required number of miles... But if they were willing to do so, I'd jump at the chance.

Doesn't hurt to ask Even if they only comp you the status, you can enjoy the elite benefits while trying to reach Platinum for next year which is still better than having no status

When traveling with the family, I generally fly Y. (I believe 1-year-old children don't belong in F or C.) The lavatories are scarce enough already. The last thing we need is more restriction of choice.
