Rumor: ANA buying A380s?

With only 3 frames, Hawaii makes sense as its a shorter flight and one frame can make one round trip making it easier to take planes out of service for maintenance.

Domestically in Japan, the A380 never made sense. The bullet train/shinkansen is taking a lot of business travellers off the Tokyo to Osaka route. Secondly a 500+ seat 77W is the plane to beat. Although you can put 800+ seats inside an A380 the plane is not certified to handle that many due to aircraft exit limitations. For Hawaii it makes more sense to do a high density J/Y split with as many Y seats they can put in.

Not sure if Guam or Okinawa can handle the A380 but other popular Japanese beach destinations makes sense.

1 other city not 2, it need 2 planes to make a daily long haul route work, othwise it would only be 3 days a week.

Hmmm

Maybe the routes are short enough to not need the full day.

Article said "other cities" so I assume maybe 2 or more?

You need more than 2 for daily long-haul if you factor in maintenance

Is Hawaii & Mainland out of operations (daily) for 3 frames?

What if it was Hawaii and S.E.A.?

Doesn't sound like NH would be doing daily on an specific route and it might make sense.

I.e. subing the A380 on Sunday from NRT-HKG since during the last summer they were adding in an extra 772 from HND-HKG.

I don't think that would happen but something similar to this might happen.

Each city I guess has it's own "peak day of the week"

Asiana did LAX daily with only 2 380s. Now they're doing LAX and JFK daily with 4 of them. They just sub in a 772 or 744 occasionally.

Like which route ?

Even the "shortest" long haul SEA-NRT won't work, as you leave today and won't arrive til tomorrow, as there is a day change.

Mainland as in US mainland ? NH have no 5th freedom right to operate that, any NH routes must be out of Japan, no US to US routes, Hawaii may not be mainland but it is still part of US.

I understand Hawaii is one of our states.
I was asking if with 3 frames it was possible to have a flight NRT-HNL and NRT-(Mainland) USA. Or would it be something like NRT-HNL and NRT-S.E.A. given the flight times nearly cut in half allowing them to do so with limited amount of frames.

In other words not daily with scheduled maintenance

That's incorrect. The 380 is scheduled 7 days a week on both routes with occasional subs. NH could do exactly the same thing. It would still be daily service.
