YVR-HND-CTS with 1 hr 40 min connection

YVR-HND-CTS with 1 hr 40 min connection
I am using UA miles and I was able to book these flights on UA web site. But, when I called UA, UA said this is not legal connection. Min time is 2 hrs. Next flight @ 9pm is not available using miles.
I just wonder if this is good connection from International to domestic Japan.
