on October 30, I purchased on alitalia.com a JFK-FCO round trip ticket for travel in mid december. I used the Canadian section of the website because I live in Canada and I wanted to be billed in CAD. I bought the ticket because it was very cheap and I have travel insurance in case Alitalia should cease opearations.
I received a confirmation email with a PNR and ticket number right away. However, nothing has shown up on my credit card statement, yet. I called my bank and they said that some money was put on hold by Alitalia but the hold was then released. According to the bank customer support representative, I might have been "lucky".
Worried that my ticket might have been cancelled, I called the Alitalia call center. I was told that my ticket has been issued correctely.
Should I be worried that when I go to JFK I might be told that my ticket was never issued? If that's the case, I don't think that my insurance policy will cover the purchase of a last minute Y class ticket on some other airline.
happened to me once couple of years ago on LX, when I arrived at JFK they said that ticket was not paid for yet, so I had to pay at check-in. Ticket was purchased online and did not get charged to my card, weird.
I had a NW ticket about a year ago that didn't get charged for about a month after purchase. I'd keep those funds available for a while just in case. At least until after you've flown the ticket.
7am flight to Venice - Mrs jsfr (her ticket with my miles was OK, mine bought with Money not miles, was supposedly not paid - although it had been) and my luggage already on the plane while I spent a half an hour pleading in the extraordinarily unhelpful/rude/incompetent Alitalia ticket office in CDG.
20 minutes before departure I gave in and bought a new, full fare ticket (they didn't even bother to find me a cheapy dummmy return and I was getting rather stressed imagining the Misses in Venice sans moi so just shelled out the cash).
It took me six months and countless calls/faxes to get refunded - and that was before they went bankrupt.
SO the answer is - CALL THEM FIRST
Ask them for the ticket number and the reservations code, with that you should be safe.
