Are you booking ex-Italy? The fare construction isn't reversible. When I flip the route (FCO-BOS-FCO) and change the sales city to Rome, I only see $625 in business and $400 on economy. I haven't tried the sales currency as EUR to see if anything else changes, but it's safe to say that fuel surcharges are lower ex-Italy vs ex-USA.

In that case, you can do what was recommended in another thread (which I agree with) and possibly fly one way on AF, one way on AZ. DL will let you combine partners on the round trip. Westbound AF from the east coast is a different animal - short flight, curtailed service - but our eastbound CDG-BOS segment was great. Might be nice to see what Alitalia and Air France both have to offer.
We did AF one way and AZ the other way last month, though it was roundtrip LAX. And while the hard wear on the AF A380 was fantastic, the service and food on AZ was far superior. They are both nice products, though, and it was nice to be able to compare.

I checked today for another thing, and confirm RT taxes for JFK-MIL are about 210 eur depending on the routing.
